Description

H. BERNEY Sept. 25. 1934.
BOX
. Filed Dec. 21, 1935 Patented Sept. 25, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a box designed for holding dresses, suits, and other light garments or the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a box preferably of card board which has an integral handle portion whereby it can be carried readily, the addition of the handle portion being possible Without adding to the cost of production or changing the general construction of the box from that commonly employed.
Another object is to provide a box the handle portion of which can be used as one means for holding the box closed.
A still further object is to provide a box of this character which is simple in construction and has no projecting portions which might interfere with the smooth wrapping of the box. I
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure l is an elevation of a box having the present improvements, the same being shown fastened in closed position.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the box and its handle.
Figure 4 is an elevation of a portion of the box as it appears when the use of a handle is not desired.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the cooperating handle-forming portions of the box prior to tearing out the removable sections.
The present improvements can be used in connection with any type of card board box or the like whether it be made of the telescopic, interfitting parts or with a hinged cover. In the drawing there has been illustrated a box of telescopic form comprising a body portion 1 and a separate cover 2 adapted to fit over and around the body portion in the usual way.
The box differs from others in that a removable area 3 is provided in one side of the body 1 adjacent to the center thereof and is a continuation of another removable area 4 in the adjacent portion of the bottom of the body. The lid or cover 2 of the box is likewise provided at the center of one side with a removable area 5 constituting a continuation of another removable area 6 in the top of the lid. The removable areas 3, 4, 5, and 6 are defined by score lines 7 or lines weakened by perforating or in any other manner. That side of the body containing the removable area 3 has its longitudinal edge portion cut away as shown at 8 and the longitudinal edge portion of the lid or cover 2 is also cut away at 9 at points opposite to the removable area 5.
When the box is to be used like an ordinary box the cover is applied to the body in the usual way and can be wrapped or otherwise fastened. However, should it be desired to provide the box with J a handle whereby it can be carried conveniently, the user tears out the removable sections 3--4 and 56 so that the overlying portions of the side of body 1 and lid 2 will thus be spaced from the bottom of the body and the top of the lid to form a handle 10, there being sufficient clearance at the sides of the handle to allow the fingers of a hand to be inserted readily into position to grasp the handle.
The parts of the box can be fastened together 30 by wrapping gummed tape about the portions of the handle 10 as shown at 11 and another piece of gummed tape can be used as at 12 for holding the parts together at a point opposite the handle.
It has been found in practice that a box constructed as herein described can be easily carried like a satchel or case and provides a convenient means for conveying articles of merchandise. Obviously the use of cord for tying together the parts is avoided.
What is claimed is:
A box including a body and a cover having lapping portions, there being an opening in the bottom of the body and in the top of the cover at opposite sides of said lapping portions and opposite each other whereby the said lapping portions can be used between the openings as a handle, and means for fastening the lapping portions together between the openings to hold the cover to the body.
