This invention relates to certain improvements in bed clothing; and the nature and objects of the invention will be readily recognized and understood by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanation and detailed description of the accompanying drawings illustrating what I at present consider to be the preferred embodiments or mechanical expressions' of my invention from among various other forms, arrangements, combinations and constructions of which the invention is capable within the spirit and scope thereof.

More particularly, the invention deals with those articles of bed clothing such as blankets, sheets, covers, spreads, counterpanes land the like, of the type which are placed and positioned on and over the mattress of a bed, and other bed clothing which may be on the mattress, by tucking or inserting the sides and ends of such articles under the mattress and between the mattress and the bed springs or other mattress supporting structure, in order to secure the articles so placed in position against displacement. With such articles of bed clothing certain serious difficulties and y disadvantages are met with and encountered in the resulting appearance of a bed made up therewith, and in the use of the bed When so made-up.

` One of the serious difficulties encountered in the use of a bed made-up with' articles of bed clothing of the type referred to, arises from the facility with which the sides and ends of the bed clothing Which are inserted under the mattress become withdrawn when the bed is occupied and under the conditions of use, with lresulting displacement and derangement of the clothing from the propel' position on the bed and mattress, and attend ant discomfort to the occupant of the bed. This difiiculty is especiallyannoying to the occupant of a bed when the ends of the bed clothing at the foot of the bed become displaced from beneath the mattress and thereby open the bed clothing to ingress of air thereunder, and/or uncovers and exposes the feet of the occupant. Still another disadvantage of such bed clothing, is the great diliculty of 5 making up a bed therewith, without unsight` ly bulging or bunching of the clothing at the corners of the mattress and the bed, when the clothing ends and sides are tucked or insei-ted under the mattress, and particularly with beds of the corner post types. Such eorner bunching or bulging materially detracts from 'the neat appearance of the made-up bed and lends to the same a' clumsy, careless, and hurriedly made-up look which is highly undesirable.

'lhe present invention holds as a general object the elimination of the foregoing difliculties and disadvantages, through the provision of a design and construction of articles of bed clothing of the above mentioned geno5 eral type, by which the bed clothing is held 'and maintained at the foot end of the mattress against lateral or vertical displacement therefrom, and by which the bunching and bulging of the bed clothing at the corners of the mattress is done away with; all Without discomfort to the occupant of a` bed madeup with such clothing, and with a decrease in the time and labor required to make-up a bed, as Well as the assurance of a proper positioning and neat appearance of the bed clothing on the made-up bed.

A characteristic of the invention through the medium of which the foregoing objects and results are attained, resides in the formation and construction of such an article of bed clothing With an end portion forming al part of the article and adapted to lit over and receive the end of a mattress, with such portion then securing and'maintaining the 85 bed clothing in position on the mattress against displacement; and a further objectof the invention is the Jrovision of a design and construction by w ich such an article of bed clothing can be readily practically manufactured from a single piece of material to provide such mattress end receiving port-ion as a part of the artieleyof bed clothing and formed from the material thereof.

Another object of the invention is to forni 95 and construct the corner portions of anartiele of bed clothing of the type above referred to, in such a manner as to eliminate bunching or bulging at the corners of a mattress when such article of bed clothing is `positioned thereon with its ends and sides inserted under the mattress in bed clothing securing position.

With the foregoing general objects and results in view, as well certain others which will be recognized from the following explanation, the invention consists in certain novel features in construction and in design and arrangements of elements, as will be more fully and particularly referred to and specified hereinafter.-

Several forms and embodiments of which the invention is capable are disclosed herewith purely by way of exam le and not of limitation. for the purpose o exemplifying and explaining the broad principles and several features of the invention to enable those skilled in the art to understand the same. Obviously, the invention can take other forms, as well as be adapted generally to various kinds of bed or such like clothing or covers of the broad type exemplified by the articles of bed clothinghere shown and described, and the invention expressly contemplates and includes such other forms and adaptations, it being understood that the present disclosure is to-be so construed and interpreted.

In the form and embodiment of the invention disclosed in Figs. 1 to 7 of the accompanying drawings, an article of bed clothing is provided having separable upper and lower cover forming members or body portions A and B, attached together at one end and unattached at their opposite adjacent ends to present a unitary article of bed clothing for placing on and over the mattress of a bed to serve as sheets, blankets, bedspreads, covers or such like, as may be desired and determined bythe materials from which the article is made.

According to the invention the unitary article of bed clothing comprising the upper and lower covers A and B, is formed and provided at the joined or attached ends of these covers, which is the lower or foot end of the article,'with a.A hood or pocket C adapted to fit over and receive the foot or lower end of a bed mattress, in order to secure and maintain the covers A and B in the proper and desired position on a mattress and the bed on and in which mounted. This hood or pocket C is located in position at the lower or foot end of the covers A and B, depending from the under side of the lower cover B, and extending inwardly a distance therealong from the foot end of the covers. The pocket C is of a width and depth to receive and relatively snugly iit over a mattress end, and comprises the end wall 10, opposite side walls 11, top wall 12 which is formed by the lower cover B, and the bottom wall 14. The inner end of the pocket C is thus open to permit of insertion and withdrawal of a mattress end -thereinto and therefrom in applying and reprovide the opposite depending side forming l vportions Af and B', for insertion under a mattress in the usual manner followed in making up a bed with such types of bed clothing.

1n Fig. 6 of the accompanying drawings l have shown a design and construction of a blank of material of the desired character, from which it is possible to form and construct the double cover form of article of bed clothing of Figs. 1 to 5. The character of material from which this blank if formed is dependent, ot course, upon the type of covers A and B desired, that is, whether they are to provide blankets, sheets, covers, spreads, or the like, as will be readily understood. This blank is formed from a single and unitary piece or length of material of a width to provide at opposite ends thereof the cover forming portions A and B with the cover sides A and B. The intermediate portion of the blank between the cover portions A-A and BB, is cut out, or otherwise formed, to provide the connecting strip or portion a having a width equal to the width of the cover portions A and B, excluding cover side portions A and B. The connecting portion a of the blank is provided at opposite sides thereof adjacent and joined with the cover portion lie-BQ with the lateral extended flaps b, `which flaps extend into and join the inner ends or edges ot the cover side portions F, rlespectively, of the cover portion B of the a an r.

lVith a blank so formed, the article of bed clothing of the invention is made-up and constructed therefrom, by lirst folding the connecting portion a which extends between cover A and the flaps b, along the intermediate transverse fold line e, and the opposite end transverse fold lines d and e, to double portion a and bring the fold lines d and e together. The doubled portion a is then folded over onto and above the portion e having flaps b, and these flaps b, along with the coverY side portions B are `folded upwardly along fold lines fto the opposite edges ofthe folded over doubled porton of a, and then the adjacent edges are stitched or otherwise secured together to :torm the seams l5 and 16, as will be clear by reference to Figs. 1, 4 and 5 of the drawings in particular. ln this manner the hood or pocket C is formed, the doubled portion a of the blank providing the pocket bottom wall 14 and end wall 10, and the flaps o sewed to the edges thereof providing the opposite side walls 11, with the top wall 12 formed by the adjacent end portion of cover B which lies between iaps Z) of the blank. Finally, by folding cover portion A-A along fold line e, over onto the cover portion B-B at the opposite sidethereoil from that on which pocket C is formed, the article of bed clothing is completed and ready for use.

The double cover providing article of bedv clothing thusformed with the under side hood or pocket C, is placed and mounted on the mattress M of a bed, referring now to Figs. 1, 3 and 5 of the drawings, by inserting an end, the lower or toot end of the mattress M into the hood or pocket C, which snugly receives and fits over the same, and

`drawing the covers A and B over and coverside of the mattress against displacement, by' the lower end hood or pocket C fitted over and on the foot end of the mattress M. lWhen m use the covers A and B cannot become 1nadvertently displaced or removed from the foot of the mattress to expose the feet of the occupant of a bed, or to permit entry of air beneath the covers A and B. It desired and under conditions of use where only a single cover is needed, the top or upper cover A can be thrown over the toot or" a bed, as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, in position removed from the mattress, yet the upper cover A forming as it does an attached part of the unitary article, is always ready and available for use when needed.

Due to the construction and arrangement of the hood or pocket C, in applied position the opposite sides 11 thereof form mattress side coversl in continuation of the sides B of the lower cover B when they are inserted under the mattress (see Fig. 7). This pocket construction and arrangen'ient also eliminates and reduces unsightly bunching of the bed clothing at the lower corners of the mattress, by presenting a sinoot lit over the mattress to give a neat appearance, and form a smooth foundation for the sides A of the top cover A, when such sides are inserted beneath the mattress of a bed.

A form of an article of bed clothing of the invention is shown in Figs. 8 to 11 of the drawings, in which but a single cover D is provided and having the mattress end receiving pocket C at the foot or lower end thereof. rlhis form of the invention is formed from a single blank of material to provide position on a mattress will be understood from and is similar to, that described with respect to the `form of the invention of Figs. 1 to 7.

A blank of material from which the article of Figs. 8 to 10 can be readily formed, is illustrated in Fig. 11 of the drawings.' This blank comprises a cover forming body portion having the opposite side forming portions D, and a portion a extended from one end thereof, with the opposite side flaps b extended therefrom adjacent and at its inner end, said flaps connected and joining at their ends into the cover side portions 1). The article is formed from this blank by folding portion a upwardly along the transverse fold line c', folding the flaps o upwardly along the fold lines f; folding portion a downwardly to the upper edges of flaps b; and then stitching the adjacent and joining edges together to form seams 15 and 16', and complete the hood or pocket C.

In another form of the invention shown in Figs. 12 and 13, an article of bed clothing of the form of Figs. 8 to 10, is shown as made without seams, by weaving. or knitting the pocket or hood C integral with the cover D and cover side portions D.

A further feature of the invention and shown as applied to the articles of bed clothing of Figs. 8 to 13, resides in cutting out the free end corners of a bed cover to provide openings E in such corners which will fit over and receive the corners of a mattress and thereby eliminate bunching and bulging of a cover at the corners when the sides and ends are inserted beneath a mattress, and particularly when used with a corner post type of bed, as, will be clear by reference to Fig. 8 of the drawings. This eut out corner feature of the invention is adapted for incorporation in covers generally, whether of the types of the present invention, or of conventional types.

By the principles and several features of the invention an article of bed clothing is provided, which can be quickly applied in position on a bed and when applied positions the article against inadvertent displacement or'derangement, thus enabling a bedto be rapidly and correctly made up to present a neat well made appearance. The articles of bed clothing so designed can also be quickly and easily removed from a bed, thus facilitating such operations.

Attention is here .directed to the fact that the term mattress as used herein and in the appended claims is to be' given a broad interpretation to include all equivalent or similar structures onto which covers or the like may be placed; and the term cover is employed herein and in the appended claims in 'a generic sense to include all articles of bed or the like clothing of the type of blankets, sheets, spreads, or their equivalents.

It -is also evident that various changes, modifications, variations, substitutions, eliminations and additions might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to l limit myself to the exact and specific disclosures hereof. l jF Desiring to protectmy invention in the broadest manner legally possible, what I claim, is:

1. An article of bed clothing comprising a cover formed at one end with a centrally disposed longitudinally extend-ed portion of less width than the width of the cover, flaps extended from oppositie edges and in lateral continuationv of said extended portion adjacent the inner end thereof and in longitudinal continuation of the cover, said flaps terminating'at their outer ends a distance inwardly from the end of the extended portion and terminating at their outer side edges spaced a distance inwardly from the opposite outer edges, respectively of the cover, said extended portion folded back onto itself along a line through the outer ends of said aps, and said flaps folded upwardly and joined along their outer edges to the opposite edges, respectively, of the extended portion to form a pocket at one side and across one end of the cover openvat its inner end, said pocket adapted to fit over and receive the end of a mattress.

2. An article of bed clothing consisting of upper and lower covers connected at-adja cent ends by a length of material of less width than the width ofsaid covers with said length of material folded along an intermediate transverse line to bring the adj acent cover ends together and folded into position under and spaced from the covers at one side thereof, opposite side liaps formed from the under cover and joined along their outer edges to the opposite outer edges. respectively, of the folded under lengthof material to the lower cover open at its inner end to receive and lit over the end of a mattress.

3. An article of bed clothing. including upper and lower covers connected at their adjacent ends by a length of material. said length of material ldoubled over onto itself onfa transverse fold line with the lower ends of the upper and lower covers drawn together thereby, said doubled over length of material folded on a transverse line along and adjacent the lower ends of the covers into position under, spaced from and substantially parallel to the normal plane of the lower cover, and the opposite side edges of the doubled over length of material joined to the adjacentouter side edge portions, re-
