DISPLAY CONTAINER AND .THE LIKE Filed June 24, 1931 Patented Nov. 24, 1931 UNITED ,ISTATESV PATENT 'o F cE I FRANK B. rural, or Inmownnoom PENNSYLVANIA, essIcnonf'rormmann a smrrn comm, or PmLADELrmA, PENNSYLV NIA, A conzronarxolv or, PENNSYL- VANIA.
mama; filed June 24,
This invention .in general relates to containers and more particularly to a foldable paper or pasteboard box, having for its prin cipal object the provision of a container of a deslgn, constructlon, arrangement and adaptation of parts 'particuIarly designed and adapted to provide means for inspection and display of the contents, and as a comem wrapping thereover;
ponent part thereof a flap serving at once or identification of the products within the container," and as a label, etc., with suitable insignia thereon.
Another object is to provide an improved foldable box of the kind described adapted for the displa of merchandise such as food products, can y, novelties, etc., in a sanitary,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the completed device as it appears in usewith food products therein, and
Figure 4 is' a transverse sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3.
For the purpose of-illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying draw-1 ings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arrange and organized and that my inven tion is-not limited to the precise arrangementa and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the drawingsxwherein similar characters of reference indicate correspondingparts I DISPLLAY comenmnmn ran LIKE 1931. Serial No. 546,519.
in the several views, in the preferred form of the invention 10 designates a form for a fold- "ablebox of the kind indicatedas struck or stamped from a sheet of paper, pasteboard or the like. The form 10 consists of a body portion 11 creased as at 12 and 13, to provide marginal strips 14 and 15 which serve as sides of the completed box and'which are formed with longitudinally extending ends 16, 17 and 18, 19 respectively,'these ends being creased" at their junction with said marginal strips 14, 15, as at 20. In addition one of the marginal strips 14 bases an important form of the present invention, a flap or tab 21 creased along the line 22 of its junction to the said strip 14. The ends 16 and 17 -mentioned above as shown in Fig. 1 have notches 23 which communicate with slits 24 for a purpose which will shortly appear.
The ends 18, 19 also have slits 25 which regisends 16 and 17 after the strips 14, 15 are bent at right angles to the body portion 11 and the ends 16, 17, and 18, 19 are interlocked by the engaging or registering of the slits 24 with slits 25 as above described, the notches 23 facilitating the operation indicated.
The container now in folded and partially completeform, is ready for filling with itsappropriate contents,; which, for example, may be the cubes of candy 26. The flap or tab 21 is now bent over to the position shown in Fig. 2, after which a transparent sheet of moisture-proof material 27 is wrapped about the container andsuitably sealed, thus practically hermetically closing the box and its contents. It will be observed by inspection of Fig. 3 that most of the contents 26 of the container is visible through the transparent wrapping 27 whilethe tab 21 which may be centrally positioned, as shown, serves as a label, etc., whereon printed or design matter, registration notice, etc. 28, may be placed.
- Attention is directed to the fact that the desirable features. achieved in the present device are accomplished by the striking out or stamping of theform 10 from sheet material by machine process in any suitable manner, so as to provide as a salient feature the flap or tab 21 which, in combination with the con- 70 ter with theslits 24 of the first-mentioned a tainer and its transparent wrapping, is, ar-
' pasted or similarly secured to the sheet of ends extending beyond the be y or any extenmaterial inclosing the box used, or placed directly on some portion of the box, this necessitating, of course, an extra operation, and in addition the unitary artistic effect of the present invention is lacking. Moreover, the tab or label 21 of my invention actually reinends thereon having means for securing same together, said marginal strips being coexten- D sive in length with said body portion, said ends exten in beyond the body or any extension thereo said displa container when forces the box as a whole while achieving the other functions indicated.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3, I have shown the tab 21 as being essentially rectangular in configuration, and this form may be preferred by some, but as is apparent, the tab 21 may be oval, round or other shape, etc., this being dictated by individual taste.
The, form 10 which is printed or provided with whatever descriptive matter desired in its fiat, unfolded condition, by the elimination of the usual top saves much material, while the desirable features of a dust and moisture proof container having means permitting inspection and display of its contents, and an integrally formed identification tab or label is likewise presented.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing] description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, "is
1. A display container for lump merchandise comprising in combination, astrip of material substantially rectangular foldedto provide a body portion having marginal strips with, dongitudinally' exten ing binder ends thereon having means for securing same together, said marginal strips being coextensive in length with said bod portion, said sion thereof, said display container when in blank form having no flap between said ends,
and a relatively narrow member formed integrally with one of the marginal strips and removed from its ends, said memberserving as a reinforcement "for said container and for the display of insignia. V
