PAUL, MINNESGTA, ASSIGNOR T9 QUALITY PARK isox eon PANY, 'OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, A CORPORATION 0F IVIINNESOTA BOX Application filed August '24, 1927.
My invention relates to a box adapted to be made from a single sheet of material, either of cardboard or other suitable material, so that same can be cut and scored to fold in a provide a box particularly adapted for candy bars and articles of a similar natrue.
A feature of my invention resides in providing a box wherein the body portion of the .side Walls and bottom, and the cover with its depending flaps are formed from a single piece of sheet material, the cover being made in a manner to overlap so as to provide a closme for the box.
It is also a'feature of my invention to provide a box wherein display matter is carried on the cover, and the side walls of the box, the box being formed from a single sheet of material so that the cover portion extends up from the sides and is formed by two flaps which overlap to close the box. The particular feature of importance in this formation of my box is the advantage of instead of discarding the cover as is ordinarily done with boxes used for candy bars and ar *icles of this nature, which are displayed upon the counter, the cover folds back in two parts to form an upper and lower display easel. This permits the use or" a portion of the box which has heretofore been discarded and gives an added feature to the attractiveness of the container by providing the upper and lower display easels which extend from the box in a manner so as to more eliectively display the contents of the same.
I find that this box can be made up in several diiierent variations, all of which function to carry out the same purpose.
These features, together with other details or" my invention will be more fully and clearly set forth in the specification and claim:
In the drawings forming a part of the specilications, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of my box as it appears in use in closed position. I
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the box open and on display as it would be used on the counter.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the box showing it partly open.
Serial no. 215,150.
Figure 4 is a detail illustrating the corner construction before the parts have been connected together.
Figure 5 illustrates the clamp which holds the corners together.
Figure 6 illustrates the corner construction with the overlapping portions clamped together.
Figure 7 illustrates the died-out geometric development for making the blank of my Figure 8 illustrates another form of my Figure 9 illustrates a difi'erent construction of my box.
Figure 10 shows the construction illustrated in Figure 9 partly open.
Figure 11 shows the construction of Figure 9 on display, with the upper and lower display easels formed by the cover.
Figure 12 illustrates a detail of the corner construction of the box as in Figure 9 before- 13 and 14.
Figure 19 illustrates the tongue and slot corner construction in the geometric died-out development of my box.
y container A is formed from a single blank of sheet material B which is adapted to be cut out as illustrated in Figure 7, and scored along .the lines 10 to permit the fold ing of the blank B into the shape to provide my container A.
This blank B is formed with a bottom portion 11, corner flaps 12, cover portions 18 and ll, having closure flaps 15 extendmg from the sides of the same. The cover flapslS and 1 1 are joined by the side portions 16 to the bottom 11. Side walls 17 project from the bottom 11.
hen the blank B is folded the corners are adapted to be secured ri idly together in a manner to form a container A of a strong nature, reinforced at the corners sufficiently to hold the container in shape. I provide metal clips 18 which are substantially 'U shaped and are provided with piercing or setting points 19.
In Figure 4: I illustrate a corner of the box A as it is folded together with the flap 12 being positioned against the sides 17 Ihe clip 18 is adapted to be attached over the flap 12 and the side 17 to clamp the side and flap together at the corner as illustrated in Figure 6.
In Figure 8 I have illustrated the cover portions either 13 or 1 1, each of which portions are the same, as separate from the sides and bottom portion of the box A, and adapted to be attached by the staples and secure the flap 21 extending from the portion 18 or 14 over the end 16 of the box.
My box A can be made up in the manner illustrated in Figures 9 to 19 inclusive with the corner portions connected together in a manner to hold the same firmly together. In Figure 18 I have shown the blank formation B which is virtually the same as the blank formation illustrated in Figure? excepting that the corner flaps 12 are omitted. In this construction of the box I have illustrated the corners as being connected together as illustrated in Figure 12, just before the abutting portions of the corner are attached, and showing the staples 2a which are adapted to pierce the abutting portions of the ends 16 and the side 17 These staples 2a are adapted to be extended through the corner portions of the box A as illustrated in Figures 18 and 1 1. This construction rigidly secures the corners of the box A together.
I have illustrated in Figure 19 the blank formation B of my box A where the sides 17 are formed with slits and the tongues 12 are so formed as to permit the same to enter the slits 25 in a manner illustrated in Figure 17, and the notches 26 in the tongues 12 are adapted to engage in the slits 25 to hold the corners of the box rigidly attached together as illustrated in Figures 15 and 16. This provides a tongue and slit corner attachment and does not require the clip 18 or the staples 2e.
My container is adapted to be formed in a simple manner, preferably in a single piece of material, scored and folded, with the corner portions connected together in a manner to provide a box with a divided cover, which is adapted to form the upper and lower easel display for the merchandise in the box. Thus when the merchant receives one of my boxes with goods therein, it is only necessary for him to open it up by breaking the sealing strip 28 illustrated in dotted outline in the drawings, which extends over the overlapping portions of the portions 13 and 14 of the cover of the box A, and then the cover portions 13 and 1e are folded open as illustrated in Figures 2 and 11, providing an easel to more effectively display the merchandise in the box. I have found that my box is very adaptable for counter use, and as a large number of these boxes are now used for merchandise of this character, my box is much to be preferred over the old style of box where the cover is a separate part of the container. In these old style boxes the covers are thrown away and then when the merchant Wants them to close up the contents of the box, he does not have them, or they have become injured and soiled, so they are not practical for use.
I Vith my cover and box of an integral nature, the box can be opened and closed readily at any time, and the added advantage of having the display on the inner surface of the cover is very desirable.
My box provides a more economical container for counter goods which is to be displayed in that manner, and yet having features which permit the box to be displayed more attractively than where the old style of cover is employed. Therefore by providing a more economical construction, and yet a more attractive display, the value of the container will be more readily appreciated.
In accordance with the patent statutes,.1 have described the principles of my container and the different forms set forth in the specification and drawings. While these illustrations, and the construction of my container are of a particular nature, I desire to have it understood that same are only illustrative of a means of carrying out my invention, and that other variations may be accomplished within the scope of the following claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
A container for candy bars formed from a single sheet of material, a bottom side and cover overlapping portions, rectangular in shape and integrally connected together,
means for securing the corners together, rectangular flaps extending from its transverse edges of said cover portion, display indicia around the outside surface of said side, and display indicia on the inside of said cover and said flaps, whereby when said box is open, 1'
the contents of said box is displayed and said cover portions are turned inside out with the indicia on the inside of said cover and said flaps spread out in open position to provide a display at the head and foot of said box wider than the width thereof to provide an extended display and easel at either end of said container.
LEON o. BIGELOW.
