CLOSURE FASTENER Filed sept. 14. 1929 m .ik
l 1 l l "In u gva/vanto@ Patented June 23, 1931 ALMIRA L. I-I. WILLSON, 0F VIRDEN, ,ILLINOIS oLosURE FASTENER- Application filed September 14, 1929. Serial No. 392,702.
This invention relates to a closure fastenerl and the invention has for an object to provide a device of this kind particularly intended for use with lids of safe deposit'boxes i using a plurality of lids and whereinall ofv the lids are effectively locked in closed position under control of a single lid.
It is also an object of the invention to provideV a closurefastener for use in connection with a .box having a plurality of lids wherein one of the lids is adapted to be held in closed position by a lock mechanism operable from without and wherein the remainder of said lids are locked in such closed position when the first named lid is closed.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement `of the several parts of my improved closure fastener whereby certain iniportant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, whereinz Figure l is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through a safe deposit boX having applied thereto a closure fastener for the lids constructed in accordance with an embodimentV of my invention, thesecond position of one of the lids being diagrammatically indicated by brok-en lines;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-*2 of Figure l looking in the direction of the arrow;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure l looking in the direction of the arrow.
In the accompanying drawings, S denotes a safe deposit boXof a conventional type and which has associated with its top a pair of hinged lids A and B, said lids A and B having swinging movement in the same general direction. The lid A is pivotally connected at its inner end portion with a rod 1 extending transversely of the boX at substantially its longitudinal center while the lid B has an end portionin close engagement with a second rod 2 positioned immediately adjacent to an end wall 3 of the box S. By this mounting of the lids A and B they both have swinging movement in the same general direction into either open `or closed position,
`and when in closed position said lids A and its free end portion closely approa-ches'the hinged end rofthe lid A and saidfree end portion of the lid B is provided with a depend-V ing flange 5 disposed transversely thereof, said flange having longitudinally spaced lslots 6. rIhis slotted flange 5 serves as a keeper for coaction with the lugs 7 carried by the inner or hinged end portion of the lid A. These lugs 7 are inwardly offset with respect to the lid A and extend beyond'the hinged end portion of said lid A and `extend sufficient to pass through the slots 6 of the flange 5 when the lid A is fully closed, the slots 6 being of sunlicient width to permit such entry. By this means with the lid B first fully closed, the lid A when closed provides effective means through the medium of the lugs. 7 and the flange 5 to hold the lid B against opening movement until after the lid A has been raised.
When desired to have accesswithin the boX S it is only necessary to operate the mechanism I to release the lid A and as the lid A is Y raised the lugs 7 are freed from the flange 5 of the lid B whereupon the lid B if desired can also be lifted into open position. In closing the boX the lid B is first moved into closed position and as the lid A is swung into closed position the lugs 7 will engage through the slots 6 of the flange 5 and thereby effectively hold the lid B against lifting movement until after the lid A has been again raised.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a closure fastener constructed in accordance With my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in'carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
l. In combination, a pair of abutting hinged closure members, a keeper carried by one of said members, and a tongue carried by the other member and engageable in said keeper whereby to lock said one member upon closing of said other member.
2. In combination, a pair of alined hinged closure members, the free end of one member abutting the hinged end of the other member, a keeper carried by said one member adjacent the free end thereof, and a locking tongue carried by the other member adjacent the hinged end, said tongue when both members are in closed position engaging said keeper whereby to lock said one member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aHiX my signature.
ALMIRA L. H. WILLSON.
