Application filed February 2'7, 1917.
To all whom it may concave:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. SHUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door Fastening Means, of which. the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to door fastenings and moreparticula-rly to fastening devices for refrigerator car doors.
It has for its object to provide a fastening construction designed with a view to taking up the slack in refrigerator car doors, due to shrinkage, swelling, insufficient padding or excessive padding, and rendering the doors air tight, without the necessity of pounding the doors together, and the use of a crow bar or other implement to pry the doors open when it is desired to gain access to the interior of the car.
The invention also contemplates the use of an auxiliary fastening device at the bottom of the inner door for holding the same in tightly closed position precedent to the closing of the outer door.
Other advantageous features of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a face view illustrating a por tion of a refrigerator car equipped with my novel door and door fastening means.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, with portions broken away.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all views of the drawings.
The door frame 1 is provided with padding 2, and the inner door is provided on its free edge with padding 8 designed to be opposed to similar padding on the free edge of the outer door. The inner door is numbered 4 and the outer door 5, and the padding on the latter is numbered 6.
A keeper 7 is fixed to the car body below the door opening, and the inner door 4 is provided with an auxiliary fastening lever 8 which is designed to work against a wear plate 9 and into and out of the keeper 7, said lever being designed to the end that the door 4 may be tightly fastened precedent to the closing of the outer door 5.

Fixed to'the car body above and below the dooropening are housings 10 which are equipped with anti-frictionrollers 11 and aredesigned to serve 'as keepers in themann'er hereinafter described.
Carried on the face of the door 5 is a bar 12 which is fixed in suitable manner to The said bar 12 describes a portion of a circle and is provided at intervals in its length with apertures 13 for the reception of an inwardly directed stud 1 1 on a hand lever 15 that is pivoted at 16 to a lug on a disk-like turning body 17, and is provided at 18 with a slot to receive an apertured lug 19 on the body 17. The said hand lever 15 is also provided with a fastening hook 20 which when the stud 14 is in one of the apertures 13 of bar 12 is designed to be seated in the aperture of lug 19 with a View to fastening the hand lever. It will also be understood that when the hook 20 is removed from the lug 19, the hand lever 15 may be swung toward the left on the lug 16 until it rests in a position diametrically opposite that shown by full lines in Fig. 1 so that it can be used as a lever in powerfully turning the body 17.
Pivotally connected at opposite points to the body 17 and suitably guided on the face of the outer door 5 are upper and lower fastening bars 21; the upper bar being provided at its upper end with a tapered head 22, and the lower bar being similarly equipped at its lower end. The said tapered or wedge-like heads 22 are designed when the bars are thrust upwardly and downwardly, respectively, to enter the housings 10 and cotiperate with the rollers 11 or other suitable abutments in the housings or on the car body, and thereby crowd the door 5 in a powerful manner into its fully closed position.
After the door 5 is closed as stated, the hand lever 15 is restored to and secured in the position shown by full lines in Fig. 1, when both doors will be strongly fastened in closed position without liability of casual release.
To unfasten the door 5, the operation described is reversed, and after the bars 21 have been disengaged from their keepers on the car body, the hand lever 15 may manifestly be used as a convenient handle with which to pull the door 5 open.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that notwithstanding its capacity of function as set forth, my improved construction is simple and inexpensive, and is Well adapted to Withstand the rough usage to Which car appurtenances are ordinarily subjected.
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination of a structure having a door opening, keepers carried on the structure at opposite sides of said opening, a turning body mounted on a door hinged to the structure and having lugs at opposite points, one of said lugs being apertured, the said door,- a bar fixed to the face of the door and describing a part of a circle and having apertures at intervals of its length, fastener bars connected with the turning-body at opposite points and adapted to cooperate With the keepers, and a hand lever pivoted 30 adapted to enter the apertures of the bar 25 that describes part of a circle.
