ADJUSTABLE 'GOLF-CLUB HEAD. l
Application led April 30, 1927. Serial No. 188,012. l
This invention relates to improvements in golf clubs, the general object of the invention being to provide means for adJustably connecting the head of the club to the shaft or handle and for enabling the club to be used either as a right-hand or a left hand one, as well as making availableeither face of the club as a striking face.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple means for permitting the head to be adjusted and locked in adJusted position by a part of the shaft.
This invent-ion also consists 1n certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts. to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appende claims.-
In describing my invention in detail, reference will b`e had to` the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the club.
' Figure 2 is -a central transverse sectional view.
Y Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the head.
Figure/l is a top plan view.
Figure 5 is a sectional detail view showing a modification.
In these views, 1 indicates the head of the club which is provided with a vflat or straight face 2 and a beveled face 3, the ends of the head being rounded, as shown at 4. A circular hole 5 is formed in the center of the head, said hole passing through the flat face and terminating short of the beveled face. An elongated hole 6 having tapered ends is formed in the upper face of the head and has its small end'communicating with the-hole 5. A cylindrical plug 7 fits in the hole 5 and this plug is split, as shown at 8, and it is also provided with a threaded tapered hole 9 at its center which intersects the slot. The ferrule l() of the shaft or handle 11 has its end tapered and threaded to engage the hole 9. Thus it will loe seen that after the lug has been putin position, the' ferrule is passed through the h'ole 6 into the hole 9 in the plug, and by screwing the ferrule in said hole 9, the plug is expanded so that it will be firmly held in the hole' 5 andv cannot turn therein.
`striking the wall of the opening in the -of which can be adjusted to suit different players and enables the plug to be used either as a right hand one or a left hand one and it also enables either face to be used as a striking face.
In the modification shown in Figure 5, the threaded hole 9 formed in the plug 7 extends entirely through the plug so that when the shaft is screwed into the plug, its end,
head in which the plug is placed, will cause the plug to frictionally engage a part of the head vand thus the parts will be locked in adjusted position. In this form of the invention, it is not necessary to split the plug nor to taper the hole therein, though this may be dwone if desired.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
1. A golf club comprising a head, a plu rotatably mounted in the center of the hea said plug having a slot extending longitudinally therein and a threaded tapered hole intersecting the slot, the head having an elongated hole in its top which exposes a portion of the plug and a shaft having its lower end threaded and tapered to engage the hole in the plug to permit expansion of the plug by the shaft.
2. A golf club comprising a head havin a hole transversely arranged therein and opening out through one side of the head, a plug in said hole having a threaded hole therein, the head having an elongated` hole in its top which exposes a portion of the plug and a shaft having a threaded end engaging the hole in the plug and means for causing the plug to frictionally engage the 110 head when the end of the shaft is placed in hole in its top which permits the shaft to be the hole in the plug to lock the parts i adjusted position.
3. A golf club comprising a head, a. sha 5 a plug rotatably mounted in the head an having a hole therein for receiving the en of the shaft, the head having an elongated ft -the head w n placed in the hole in the plug and 'means for causin the plug tol rictionally engage 10 en the end of the shaft is placed in the plug. In testimony whereof I aiix my Jsignature.
