A bar 28 is suitably attached to the cover 25. The ends 01 this bar form trunnions which find a bearing in brackets 30 attached to the frame 26. The cover is pressed toward closed position by spring 29 upon a rod 301 supported from the walls of the cash box and engaging said cover. The bar 23 is provided with a longitudinal slot 280 which receives the removable operating handle 31. This handle comprises notches and lugs which are so related to the openings in the cash box walls through which it must pass that a movement of the cover from closed position to extreme open position and back again to closed position is necessary to either insert or withdraw the handle. For this purpose the wall 12 adjacent the thrunb piece 282 on the operating handle is provided with a horizontally elongated opening 287, and the wall opposite the thumb piece is pro-- vided with an upwardly elongated opening 285, as shown in Figure 4:. The handle may thus be inserted through the ad icent wall only when in a horizontal position, and through the opposite wall only when in an inclined position, in which position the cash box cover is open. When the handle is in operating position reduced portions 233 and 28 1 are opposite the walls of the cash box and permit the operating handle to turn.

Provision is made for preventing the re moval of the operating handle until the bolt of the Yale lock has been retracted to permit the operation of the cash box retaining devices to release the cash box. For this purpose a bell crank 333 l is pivoted on spindle 161. The arm 33 of this bell. crank is in engagement with the tongue 22 of the Yale lock, the bell crank being held in this position by means of spring 35, one end of which is held by a stud on the wall 10. The arm 84: of the bell crank is adapted to engage a groove 36 in the operating handle adjacent the thumbpiece. The spring 35 moves this arm to unlocking position when the tongue 22 of the Yale lock is retracted.

A slide 37 for locking the cash box cover extends transversely of the bar 28 and is supported from the operating plate 25 of the cash box cover on studs 38 passing through slots in said slide. The slide is designed to be positively operated when the operating handle is withdrawn. For this purpose a one-way paw 39 is pivoted on a stud 40 on the end of slide 3'7 adjacent to the operatinghandle. This pawl has a beve ed end 391. which is upturned in such a manner as to engage the end of slide 37 and prevent the pawl rocking when it is eng ged by the operating handle as it is withd a 1. On the handle being inserted, however, the pawl rocks idly on. its pivot. A spring 41 tends to hold the pawl in operative position.

The pawl 39 extends through a lateral slot slide 37 on which it is mounted, is forced outward. The opposite end of the slide 37 engages a slot 4.5 in. a plate 46 extending downward from the frame 26. I

The locking slide 37 is spring pressed toward ineii'ectiv-e position by means of a spring 4L7 mounted on a stud 48 on the plate 25 and engaging a stop 49 on the locking slide; hence provision must be made for securing the slide 37 in looking position. For this purpose with a shoulder 50. hen the slide 37 is in forward position, a tongue 51 of a spring lock indicated generally by 52 engages shoulder 50 retaining slide 37 against being withdrawn from slot 4E5by its spring M. The key which unlocks lock 52 is kept in the oflice oi? the cashier or some other responsible oilicial of the company so that the box is positively locked against being opened until it is in the hands of such oflicial. An altogether different key unlocks the Yale lock which permits the box to be removed from the frame 10.

It has been found in practice that the opening in the wall 12 of the cash box, which is designed to permitthe operating handle to be withdrawn only when the cover closed and in position to be locked, becomes worn to such an extent as to permit the withdrawal of the operating handle while the slide 37 is entirely out of reach of the plate 46; hence the handle can be removed and the cash box also removed without the cover being closed and locked. In the pres' ent invention provision ismade for overcoming this .difliculty. A plate 53 is mount ed on the cover 25 by means of studs 52%. and is spring pressed toward the right in Figure 2 by spring A downturn'ed end 531 of plate 53 engages a notch. 56 in the loclringslide 3?. To withdraw the end 531 from notch 56, and permit the operation of the slide to locking position, a cam 53 is placed on the frame 26. The arrangement is such that plate 53 will be moved to the left by cam 58, a suiiicient distance to permit the operation of the locking slide when, and only when the cover is entirely closed and in position to be locked.

In order to remove the cash box from the frame 10, the following operations are necessarv in the order named.

First, a Yale key must be inserted in lock 23 and turned to retract the bolt 22. This operation perntits spring 35 to rock bell crank 3334, withdrawing arm 34 from the notch in the operating handle. The cover is then the locking slide is provided,

A cash box closure comprising a hinged cover, a locking slide adapted to lock said cover in closed position, a retaining slide normally preventing movement of said locking slide, a device for positively actuating the lockingslide but normally incapable of the requisite movement, meansfor moving said retaining slide to ineffective position, and means releasing said device for lock actuating movement, both said means becoming effective when said cover is moved to closed position.

26. A cash box closure comprising in combination a cover, a lockingslide adapted to be positively actuated toward locking position, a spring'pressing said. locking slide toward unlocked position, a retaining slide normally holding said locking slide-in unlocked position, means effective when said cover is closed for moving said retaining slide to ineffective position, means for actuating said locking slide when saidcover is in closed position, and means for retaining said locking slide in locked position against the tension of its spring.

27. A cash boxclosure comprising a cover spring pressed toward closing position, a positive lock for said cover, an operating handle for said cover capable of both rotary and longitudinal movement, means whereby said rotary movement opens said cover against the tension of its spring, and means whereby longitudinal movement actuates said positive lock.
