Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1912.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. KOHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Fare- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
Que object of my invention is to improve the construction of a fare box in which a series of compartments are used for the reception of the fares. I
A further object is to provide means for raising and lowering the chute so as to allow the chute to be projected into any one of the tills of the fare box, insuring the delivery of all fares into the till in line with the chute.
The invention also relates to certain details of construction which will be fully described hereafter; reference being had to the accompanying drawings in' which Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved fare box; Fig. 2, is a rear view, partlyin section; Fig. 3, is a sectional elevation, looking from the front of the box; Fig. 4, is a sectional view on the line a a, Fig. 3; Fig. 5, is a sectional plan view on the line 7)b, Fig. 3; Fig. 6, is a detached perspective view illustrating one feature of the invention; Fig. 7, is a detached perspective view illustrating another feature of the invention; and Fig. 8, is a view illustratinga detail of the invention.
1 is theJoody of the fare box, having a fare receiving section 2, in which are inclined defleeting plates 3. At the bottom of the fare receiving section is a movable discharge device 4, of any suitable type. In the present instance, this discharge device consists of a segmental section 5 to which is pivoted a plate 6, which is in turn connected by a link 7. The segmental section is mounted on a shaft 8, on which is an arm 9, connected by a link 10 to'an operating lever 11, which is pivotally mounted on the casing and is provided with a handle 12. When it is wished to discharge the fares from the fare receptacle, the handle is moved inthe direction of the arrow, Fig. 3; causing the plate 6 to drop away 'from the bottom of the fare receiving section and discharging the fares into the hopper 13; the segmental section closing the opening in the fare receiving section. I lay no claim to this construction in the present application.
In the bottom of the fare box 1 is a drawer 14, in which there is a detachable fare receptacle 15, having a series of removable tillsfour in the present instance. Inclosing the fare receptacle is a cover consisting of a series of sliding sections 17, interlocking at the edges, when extended.
18 is a. lock on the fare receptacle which engages one of the sections 17, when extended,-so as to lock all of the sections in position. On the drawer is a lock 19, which secures the drawer in position in the fare box.
I lay no claim to the above described arrangement of the fare receptacle in this invention.
20 is a chute for directing the fares from the hopper 13 to any one of the tills 16. This chute not only turns on-its pivot, to aline with any one of the tills, but has also a limited vertical movement. Projecting from the casing are studs 21 and mounted on these studs are arms 22 and 23; there being on the chute pins 24, which extend through openings in the said arms 22 and 23. In order to raise the chute, I extend one of the pins 24 through a slot in the casing 1 of the fare box and mount on the pivot pin an indicating arm 26, provided with a handle 27, so that by raising the handled arm 26 in the slot 25 the chute is lifted; the arms 22 and 23 turning on their pivot studs 21. When the chute is raised, it can be shifted to aline with any one of the tills 16. Indicating marks on the outside of the casing 1, as illustrated in Fig. 1, indicate the particular till with which the chute is in alinement. When the hopper is lowered it enters the mouth of a till, as indicated in Fig. 3, so as to insure the proper delivery of the fares into the till.
On the chute 20 is a weighted arm 28, which tends to normally hold the chute in line with the first till 16, but in order to hold the chute in line with the other tills, I provide a notched segment 29 having notches 30, four in the. present instance. Engaging this segment is a tooth 31, carried by an arm 32, pivoted at 33 to the transverse partition within the fare box. The segment between the slots is preferably beveled so as to insure the tooth 31 entering a slot in the .chute, when said chute is lowered after adjustment.
Carried by the tooth 31 is a spring bolt 51 which engages the segment when the chute is raised. The bolt is beveled on'one side so that, while the chute can be moved from the/first till forward, it cannotbe returned until the fare receptacle is removed.
The arm 32 has a projection 34 which rests upon the fare receptacle when within the box. As soon as the fare receptacle is removed, a spring bolt 35 forces the arm '32 down \and releases the chute from the bolt, after which it can be returned to its first position.
In order to insure the raising of the chute and, at the same time, render positive the discharge of the fares from the fare receivin g section into the fare receptacle before the drawer is opened, I provide a shaft 36,
on which is a latch lever 37, which is normally located in front of the drawer and prevents its removal. On the inner end of the shaft 36 is an arm 38, held by a latch 39, having a long bolt 40, turned down atits rear end 41 in the path of the fare receptacle 15 within thedrawer 14. By this con struction, when the drawer is open, the latch 39 will hold the lever 37 in the raised posi-.
tion clear of the drawer opening, but, if the drawer is moved to the closed posit-ion without the receptacle being in place, the latch 39 will not release the lever 37. If, however, the receptacle is in position, as in Fig.
'30 3, and the drawer is closed, then the receptacle comes in contact withthe portion 41 of the bolt and will release the lever 37.
The lever will be moved to a position in- 45 that the chute must be raised before the drawer can be opened.
In order to prevent the accumulation of fares in the fare receiving section, I provide means for discharging the fares from said fare receiving section simultaneously with the raising of the chute, and this is accomplished by pivoting a link 45 to the arm 43. The upper end of this link is slotted, as at 46 and on the arm 47 mounted on the'shaft 8, is a pin 48, which extends through the slot.
As this shaft 8 carries the discharge nfechanism, the upward movement of the link 45, on the movement of the hand lever, will shift the discharge mechanism to the open position, and will discharge any fares that may have accumulated in the fare receiving section before the drawer is opened and'the fare receptacle removed.v By forming a slot 46in the link 45 the hand lever 12 can be moved without lifting the hopper 20.

fare receiving section, means for discharg- This invention is particularly adapted for use on passenger cars of the type-in which the conductor is located at a given point on the car and passengers pay their fares as they enter the car. on the first trip of the day the chute is set to aline with the No. 1 till, as indicated in the drawings, and when a second conductor takes the car he adjusts the chute by lifting the arm 26, turning it to aline' with the No. 2 indicating mark, as shown in Fig. 1; bringing the hopper in line with the second till. If another conductor takes the car during the day he shifts the chute before starting his route, the fares being deposited in No. 3 till, and if a fourth g0 conductor has charge of the car he will shift the chute so that all the fares collected by him will be deposited in No. 4 till; thus enabling an accurate record to be kept of the fares collected by each conductor. The 35 conductor can operate the discharge lever 12 as the fares accumulate in the fare receiving section and the fares will'be conveyed from the hopper'and chute 20 into the proper till. At the end of the day the proper oflicial can unlock the drawer and remove the fare receptacle 15, with the several tills.
Means is provided such, for instance, as the toothed wheel 49. which engages a pin 50 on the upper sliding plate 17 and the several plates are held until the drawer is v moved out to its full extent; the upper plate being then engaged by the bolt of the lock 18. When the drawer has been pulled out to its full extent the toothed wheel is released, as the arm 52 on the shaft of the toothed Wheel 49 drops back of the fare receptacle 15; allowing the wheel to turn; releasing the pin 50 and permitting the drawer to be removed. This ratchet mechanism forms no part of my present invention. Before the drawer can be opened, the hand lever 37 must be turned so as to clear the drawer and this turning of the hand lever raises the chute 20 clear of the drawer; tilting the discharge device of the fare receiving section; thus insuring the discharge of all the fares from the fare receiving section before the drawer is opened. As soon as the chute is released from the control of the tooth 31 and its weight returns it to its first position, so that when the fare receptacle is removed from the drawer and another one placed in its stead and the drawer closed, thechute is in proper position in line with the No. 1 till.

The combination in a fare box, of a fare receiving section, a drawer having a fare receptacle therein, a pivoted chute for directing'the fares from the fare receiving section into the fare receptacle, a shaft, a hand lever on the shaft, one arm of the hand lever being normally in position in front of the drawer, an arm on the inner end of the shaft, supporting arms for the chute, a lug connecting the arm on the shaft with one of the supporting arms of the chute so that when the hand lever is turned to release the drawer the chute is raised, a latch for'engaging the arm on the inner end of the shaft, the bolt of the latch extending to the rear of the drawer compartment and of the fare box, said arm having a'tooth engaging the segment and holding it in the position to which it is adjusted, a latchmounted on the tooth and beveled on one side so as to allow the chute to be moved forward when raised, but preventing it from returning to its first position. 3
