LOCK.
Filed Sept. 7, 1923 Patented Mar. 30, 1926.
MNETE rara MAXWELL C. MAXWELL, OF STANFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR 'lO THE YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
LOCK.
Application filed September To all whom t may concer/n Be it known that I, MAXWELL C. MAX- WELL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stamford, in the. county of Fair-- field and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in locks and more particularly to means whereby a lock of the cylinder type is armored, one object of the invention being to so armor a housing in which the cylinder lock is contained that drilling of the pins of the lock shall be prevented, so that sawing off the housing from its supporting member shall be guarded against, and to provide armor means whereby the plug of the lock shall be protected.
Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying' drawings,-
Figure l is a face view of a lock structure Vin which my improvements are embodied, and
Figure 2 is a sectional View.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, a. rim lock casing l is secured to a reinforcing plate 2 disposed against the inner face of a door 8. A hardened steel escutcheon or guard plate 4 is placed against the outer face of the door and. provided with bosses 5 entering the wood of the door, said bosses being internally threaded for the reception of bolts 6 which pass through the door and secure the escutcheon or guard plate 4 against the door and to the reinforcing' plate 2 on the inner face of the door. A cylinder lock 7 is located in a suitable opening in the door and is secured to the reinforcing plate 2 by means of bolts 8. The escutcheon plate 4 is recessed to receive vthe head portion of the cylinder lock and in the opening in said plate 4 which aligns with the plug of the cylinder lock 7, a hardened steel armor disk 9 is mounted to protect said plug against drilling.
7, 1923. serial no. 661,487.
The rim lock easing` l, which is preferably made of malleable iron, is provided with an integral enlargement forming a housing l() which receives an inner cylinder lock 11. This housing is provided with an opening l2 in line with the plug of the lock l1 and in this opening a hardened steel armor disl 13 is mounted to protect said plug. .ioth of the cylinder locks are operatively connected with the bolt mechanism of the rim lock but as these features form no part of my scription of the same herein is not necessary.
rlhe housing l0 is formed with a plu` rality of ribs 14 which are substantially parallel with the axis of said housing and they are bored to receive hardened steel armor pins 15 which will serve to prevent the housing or any part thereof from being sawed olf in an attempt to saw olf the cylinder lock 11 or disable the latter.
In order to prevent drilling of the pins of the lock Il to disable the latter the housing 10 is bored at right angles to its axis for the reception of one or more hardened steel armor pins 1G which, as shown in Fig ure 2, will be disposed over a vital part of the cylinder locl structure and will prevent a boring tool inserted at the free end of the housing from reaching such vital part of the cylinder lock ll.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is: Y
1. In a lock structure, the combination of a housing, a cylinder lock enclosed by said housing, and armor pins located in the wall of the housing substantally parallel' with the axis of the cylinder' lock.
2. In a lock structure, the combination of a housing, a cylinder lock enclosed by said housing, armor pins located in the wall of the housing substantially parallel with the axis of the cylinder lock, and an armor pin located in the end wall of the housing to protect the pins of the cylinder lock.
3. In a lock structure, the combination of a cylinder lock, a housing enclosing the same, said housing having a plurality of ribs substantially parallel with the aXis of the same, and hardened steel armor pins located in said ribs.
4. In a lock structure, the combination of present invention, a detailed de` a cylinder lock, a housing enclosing' the Same and havingimbedded therein hardened steel arinor pins substantially parallel with the axis of the housing' and having` imbedded in its end Wall a hardened steel armor pin ai' Substantially right angles to the l'irst inentuned armor pins, said housing havingv an Opening in its end Wall in line with the plug; of the Cylinder lock, and a hardened steel disk mounted in said Opening and in 'front of the plug' of the cylinder leek.
In estilnony whereof7 I have signed this Sperilieaion.
