March 4 1924.' 1 W. T. BQICE comamsp PENCIL SHARPENER AND HOLDER ori inal Filed May 17 1922 Patented Mar. 4, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. WILLIAM 'I'. BOICE, 0F DAVENPQRI'IOWA.
COMBINED PENCIL SHARPENER. AND HOLDER.
Original application filed May 17, 1922, Serial No. 561,670. Divided and this application filed May 9, 1923. Serial No. 637,841.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. Boron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Pencil Sharpener and Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a combined pencil sharpener and holder and the subject matter of the invention has been divided from my application filed May 17,
1922, hearing Serial Number 561,670.
The principal object of the invention is to provided a device of this nature having an improved structure which may be readily applied or removed from any ordinary pencil.
lVith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective of the device showing the same disassembled,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the sharpener and a portion of the holder taken on an enlarged scale,
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken through the holder adjacent the clip end thereof,
Figure 4c is a transverse section taken on the line 4-4 of. Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a perspective of the body of the sharpener, and
Figure 6 is a transverse section taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the pencil holder consists of a tubular body 1 provided at one end with a pair of diametrically opposed pins or lugs 2 and at its other end with a pair of diametrically opposed longitudinally extending slits 3. A bail at is encircled about the slitted end of the body 1 and pivotally supports a clip member 5 which is preferably formed of spring metal terminating at one end with a bent in portion 6 extending between itself and one portion of the body 1, tending to keep the slits 3 closed. It will thus be seen that this spring portion 6 tends to hold the body 1 in firm engagement with the pencil and prevent-the same from slipping therefrom. The remaining portion of the clip 5 is of conventional construction and is curved at its end as shown at 7 so that it may be easily slipped over the edge of a pocket and hold the cloth of the pocket in engagement with the holder preventing the same from being accidentally removed from the pocket. Adjacent the other end of the body there is situated a gripping collar 8 to aid in slightly rotating the body 1 for a purpose as will appear later.
The pencil sharpener consists of a body 10 of tubular construction and split longitudinally so as to provide the slit 11. One end of the body 10 is tapered or conical shape as shown at 12 for receiving the pointed end of the pencil. A pair of diametrically opposed bayonet grooves 13 are disposed at the other or larger end of the bod 10 for receiving the pins 2 of the hol er 1 when the tWo bodies are assembled together.
A conical shape knife 13 is disposed in the tapering port-ion 12 of the sharpener body 10 and is provided with a slit 14 having one edge thereof sharpened for cutting the pencil in a manner which will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. The body 10 is formed so that the slit 11 is normally open. A projection or lug 16 is in the form of a cam. A rotatable sleeve 17 is provided with a pocket 18 for receiving the cam 16. WVhen this sleeve 17 is rotated so as to place the pocket 18 out of coincidence with the cam 16 the edges of the slit 11 are forced together and the edges of the slit 14 are likewise forced together whereby a small pencil may be used by allowing the point thereof to project through the opening in the lower end of the members 12 and 13. This sleeve 17 is held in place between two fixed collars. 19 on the body 10.
It is thought that the operation and advantages of the device will be readily understood without a more detailed description or explanation. It is desired, however, to point out that the present modification is merely shown by way of example and that minor changes in structure and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to that fall within the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is In combination, a pencil sharpener including a tubular split body portion formed with a cone-shaped extension, a knife in the coneshape extension, a cam on the body portion,
10 a sleeve provided with a pocket for receiv- In testimony whereof I'afiix my signature 15 in presence of two witnesses.
