UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE- JOHN F. FOLEY, or A'ITLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, assronoa IQ BLISS BROTHERS comrm, or ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
POWDER CONTAINER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. F onnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Powder Containers, of which the following is a spec1fication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in powder containers and pertains more particularly to containers of this type used forjpersonal wear, and which may be carried in a vanity case or the like, or worn attached to a chain'about the neck of the wearer.
The primary object the invention is to provide a'container of this type which has novel means for enabling the powder to be easily and quickly ejected and which also can be easily and quickly filled with a fresh supply of powder.
The invention further aims to provide a device of this kind which is of simple and economical construction and which is devoid of all moving parts likely to be deranged.
A further object of the invention is to provide'a container of this kind which is efficient for the purpose; which reliably controls the egress of the powder, and which still can be made in small and compact form so as to allow of manufacture for purpose of personal wear. 4
Further and other-objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the parts in discharging position;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure 1, showing the finishing member as in the act of being forced into locked position; and
Figure 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention a preferably cylindrical and tubular body 1 is employed the lower end of which is open and formed with a circular row of powder discharge holes 2. The upper or opposite endof the body 1 is also open and is formed with a circular rib 3 extending into its interior so as to form a stop for a closure 4. the latter shown ofhollow cap formation. so that upon removalof the closure 4 a new or fresh supply of powder may be placed into the body 1. The body1 is also formed with an outwardly projecting ridge or head 5 which is adapted to be 011-. gaged by a corresponding hollow ridge or head 6. of a finishing member 7, which-bead (i snaps over the ridge or bead 5, so as to thereby hold the member 7 against accidentalremoval. .The finishing or protecting member 7 is formed with a closed end '8 to which is attached a ring 9 so that the latter may be secured to a neck chain or the like. '1" he member 7 may be ornamented as desired, and since the end 8 is rigidly secured thereto it will be seen that the plug or ch sure 4 is held against accidelfal removal.
The opposite end of the body 1 is provided with a cap 9 which is rigidly secured thereto, and slidably mounted on the body 1 between't-he bead 5 and the cap 9 is a sleeve 10 provided with a head 11 at its inner end. The bead 11 engages the head 6 of the mem her 7, and thereby limits movei-nent of the sleeve 10 in one direction. movement of the sleeve 10. in the opposite direction being limited by engagement of the outer end of the sleeve with the cap 9'. The sleeve 10 acts as a valve. as illustrated in Figures '1 and 2, so that when slid into the position of Figure 1, the powder outlets are uncovered and powder may befreely shaken through the said outlets 2. and when moved' or slid to the position of Figure 2. the outlets 2 are closed or covered so as to prevent egress of the powder.
When it is desired to replenish the powder supply member 7 is moved to disengage its head 6 from head 5 as shown in Figure 2. and then completely moved from the body 1. which renders the plug 4 accessible for removal. The sleeve 10 can also be ornamented or-decorated as desired. so that the entire device can be produced in attractive form appealing to the esthetic emotions.
Having thus described my invention.
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a powder container. a tubular body open at its outer end and having discharge openings near its said end. a closure'for said outer end beyond the openings. said body being formed with. an inwardly extending circular ridge adjacent to its inner end, a
closure for said inner end of the bodycngaging, the inwardly. extending ridge. :1 finishing member closed at one end and provided with a ring thereon and having its opposite end formed with a hollow ridge to snap over the outwardly extending ridge formed on the body and a sleeve slidable on having one end closed and formed with discharge openings and having a. ridge exten ding outwardly between its ends, a removable closure for the opposite end of the body, a finishing member vformed to enclose the removable closure and having means to snap over the ridge, and a sleeve slidable on the body between said closed end thereof and the inner end of the finishing member for covering and uncovering the discharge openm s.
g. In a powder container, a body closed at one end and having discharge openings, a
removable closure for the opposite end of the body, at protecting member for the removable closure enclosing the latter, means ,to removably connect the protecting member to the body, and a sleeve valve for controlling the openings.
4. In a powder container, a body having discharge openings at one end, a removable closure for the opposite end of the body, a protecting member for the removable closure inclosing the latter, spring means for securing the protecting member to the body, and a slidable sleeve valve 'for controlling the opening.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN F. FOLEY.
