PATENT "OFFICE.
JEWEL WRIST-SAFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 23, 1920. Serial No. 391,043.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARY S. ZEITLER and W INFIELD; S. LLOYD, citizens of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewel Wrist-Safes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to containers for jewelry and the'like and more particularly to that class of such containers which comprisesreceptacles adapted to be attached to some portion of the body of the user.
The principal object of our invention is to provide a safe container for jewelry and the like, which is adapted to be worn as a wrist bracelet and is so constructed as to be capable of being worn in the water without permitting contact of the jewelry withthe water.
Another objectis to. provide a container of this type in which the wrist attaching strap serves as a positive securing means for the container cover.
An additional object is the provision of a combined cover handle and strap keeper.
A still further object is the provision of positive securing means for the container cover, which means render the container waterproof.
\Vith these and such other objects in view, as will be apparent from the description, our invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a longitudinal section of the preferred form of our invention, applied, part of the wrist strap being in elevation,
Fig. 2, a top plan view of the container,
Fig. 3, a side elevation thereof, and,
Fig. 4, a vertical section on the lin l-4 of Fig. 1.
In brief, our invention is a bathers appliance, comprising a container made of waterproof material, preferably of light metal such as aluminum, adapted to be worn on the wrist of the user but capable of being attached at the ankle orother portions of the body. The container is provided with a hinged cover, the handle of which serves as a keeper for the wrist strap, eliminating possible accidental opening of the cover. The lid or cover is arranged to cooperate with the walls of the container to prevent leakage of water through the closure.
Described in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the safe comprises a container 1, of substantially oval plan formation, having a bottom 2, slightly bowed to conform to the contour of the wrist of a user. Integrally formed to the bottom and extending longitudinally therefrom at opposite ends of the container, are bar keepers?) and 4 adapted to receive a wrist attaching strap 5 which passes beneath the bottom 2 and is provided with suitable end fastening means 6, of any approved type.
The side and end walls of-the container are formed integral with the bottom 2 and extend upwardly therefrom in substantially conoidal formation, a sufficient distance to provide a proper depth of container body for holding rings and 'the like. The top of the container is open and the walls terminate parallel to the bottom 2 as clearly illustrated. Adjacent the top, the walls are provided with an external bead 7, crimped or otherwise formed thereinto and extending Patented Sept. 14, 1920. v
entirely around the body of the container parallel to the bottom 2.
Attached to the body of the container by means of a hinge 8, located at one end thereof adjacent the keeper 3 and below the bead 7, is a closure member comprising a substantially frusto-conical cover 9, adapted to completely engage over the walls'of the container and provided with an internal groove 10, crimped or otherwise formed therein, and shaped to receive the bead 7 when in closed position. i
The cover 9 is shaped to the form of the container body, the top 11, being bowed to parallel the bottom-2, and its internal dimensions are such that a slight force is required in closing, the material being of such nature as to permit of a slight resiliency whereby the cover will snap down over the bead 7 and engage the groove 10 therewith; This construction of the bead and groove serves to effectually prevent leakage of water into the interior, making in effect a packing strip between the cover and body of the container.
Particular advantage is derived in loeating the hinge 8, below the bead, as there can be no leakage through the hinge to the interior. a
The oppositeend of the cover is provided with a handle in the form of an integral keeper bar 12 adapted to receive the strap 5 therethrough and over when in closed position, thus providing a positive securing means for the cover, irrespective of the bead and groove described.
While we have shown and described certain specific materials and details entering into the construction and operation of our invention, we desire it to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to these, but that any such may be used as will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed' 1. In a water proof container, the combination of a receptacle, a cover hinged thereon, means to prevent leakage between said cover and receptacle, a handle on said cover, keepers on said receptacle and a body attaching strap disposed through said handle and keepers, whereby said cover is positively secured in closed position on the receptacle. a
2. A water proof container comprising an elongated receptacle adapted to be attached to the wrist of a user and having a closed bottom bowed to conform to the contour of the wrist, walls integral with said bottom, the top of said receptacle being open, a bead formed in said walls parallel with the botin water tight relation, and means to attach said receptacle to the wrist of a user, said! means serving to retain the cover in closed, position. v
3. in a water proof container, the combination of a receptacle, a cover therefor, 40
means on said receptacle for water tight engagement with theicover, a hinge connecting said cover to the receptacle below said means, a handle integrally formed on said cover, keepers on the receptacle, and a body attaching strap passing through said keepers and the handle to maintain said cover in closed position.
4. A water proof container comprising a receptacle, a cover hinged thereon, means to prevent leakage between said cover and receptacle, a handle on said cover, keepers on the receptacle, said handle and keepers being adapted for cooperative engagement with means for attaching the receptacle to the person of a user whereby the cover is maintained 1n closed positlon.
In testlmony whereof we aflix our slgnatures.
MARY S. ZEITLER. WINFIELD S. LLOYD.
