To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. WI-inn- LOCK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Bottle Top and Look, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to bottle closers and particularly to an improved closer or cover which acts in the doublecapacity of a cover and as a lock.

The object in view is to provide a combined cover and lock for a bottle or similar receptacle which is in the nature of a combination lock whereby it cannot be removed until the combination has been properly actuated.

Another object in view is to provide a closer for a bottle wherein the neck of the bottle is formed with a stepped construction and a corresponding shaped cap provided together with locking means for holding the cover in place.

A still further object is to provide a com-- bination lock with a cover or cap for bottles or other receptacles wherein a plurality of combinations may be used and holding means associated therewith to prevent accidental shifting of any part.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing part of a bottle with an embodiment of the invention applied thereto, the same being partly broken away for better illustrating the construction.

Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a bottle of any desired kind provided with a neck 2 which. merges into a head 3 having an opening extending centrally therethrough, which is adapted to receive a stopper 4 of any desired material, as for instance an ordinary cork. This cork may be applied and removed easily, but in order to prevent such removal by an unauthorized person the cap 5 is supplied, which interlocks with parts of the head 3 so as to protect the stopper.

From Fig. 1 it will be noted that the head 3 is provided with a stepped formation, 7 and 8, are pre even less number could be used without departing from the spirit of the invention. The cover 5' is formed with the same number of shoulders as the head '3 so as to conform therewith. It will be observed that the respective shoulders are provided with annular grooves, 9, 10 and 11, and with vertical grooves 12, 13 and 14, extending from the top of the respect ve shoulders downwardly into the respective grooves so that the various pins 15 may pass through the various vertical grooves into the horizontal grooves and then partially around the horizontal grooves for producnig a locking action for the various sections 16, 17 and 18. These sections are independently movable and are connected by having a bead 19 adjacent the bottom of each section and a turned-in flange 20 whereby a guiding groove is formed through which the next adjacent section moves.

Arranged on each of the sections is a series of numbers 21, co-acting with the respective plungers 23. These plungers are sl dlngly mounted in suitable holders 24c, soldered or otherwise secured in place and carry springs 25 to resiliently hold the plunger 23 in a lowered position. Arranged on the neck 2 at a convenient point is a line or indication 26, which is to line up with certain of the numbers 21 on the section 16. The numbers on section 17 line up in any predetermined manner with the numbers on section 16, while the numbers 21 on section 18 are designed to be lined up with the numbers on section 17, according to the particular combination used.

As shown in the drawing, the combination is such so that when the number 1 is in line with the designation 26, pin 15 on section 16 will be in line with the vertical slot 12. When the numeral 4; is in line with O on section 16. the pin 15 on section 17 will be in line with the vertical slot 13, while pin 15 will be in line when the numeral 1 is in line with 1 on section 17. It is evident, of course, that the numbers 21 on the various sections could be rearranged at any time so as to change the combination. After the combination has been once set the cover 5 may be easily removed by a vertical pull, as all the pins 15 are in line with the respective vertical slots. After the cover has been replaced the same will be locked by turning any one section, though it is preferable ordinarily to turn all three sections. with the slot 14- groove, a vertical cidental turning whereby when the cap is removed it will remain in proper position to be readily and quickly applied.

VVhat I claim is:

1. A combination cover and lock for bottles comprising a head for a bottle formed with a plurality ofshoulders, eaehshoulder having an annular groove and a vertical groove, a cap having astepped' formation fitting the shouldered formation of said head, each of the steps of the cap being independently rotatable, and a locking pin 7 or bolt connected with each of said steps adapted to pass through said vertical grooves into the annular grooves whereby a pin extending from,

therespective vertical grooves into the horizontal grooves so that whenturned out of alinement with the vertical grooves a looking action will result, and a spring pressed plunger for temporarily locking the sections in any adjusted position.

3. A combination lock of the character described comprising a head for a bottle having a stepped construction, the steps thereof being annular and formed with ahorizontal annular groove, and a vertical groove, said head having a passageway therethrough for receiving a stopper, a cap of metal fitting over said head and con-v forming substantially to the shape thereof, said cap being constructed in independent sections independently rotatable but connected together, a locking pin extending in wardly from each of the sections of the cap, said pins being adapted to pass vertically through the vertical slots and then horizontally into the horizontal slots for locking the cap against movement, a plurality of indicating legendson each section of said cap, an indicating legend arranged at the bottom of the head, and resilient means for temporarily locking the sections of said cap against accidental movement.
