- My invention consists in furnishing the end of the snath to which the shank of the blade is secured with a hoop, having an inclined lip at the top to correspond with the bevel of the shank, with a lug on the bottom for receiving a tightening-screw, and two lugs on one of the sides, between which and ona central pin works a lever, so arranged that one point of the same shall coincide with that of the screw, the opposite point being formed to suit the bevel on the shaft, so that on tightening the screw the shank becomes secured between the point of the lever and the inclined lip on the top of the hoop, and thus the blade is firmly attached to the snath, from which it may easily be removed by releasing the point of the screw from the lever.

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 13,496, dated August 28, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. JosLYN, of the city of Worcester, county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Scythe-Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghadto the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side view of a portion of the snath and blade of a scythe with my improved fastener Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 a plan.
My invention consists in furnishing the end of the snath to which the shank of the blade is secured with a hoop, having an inclined lip at the top to correspond with the bevel of the shank, with a lug on the bottom for receiving a tightening-screw, and two lugs on one of the sides, between which and ona central pin works a lever, so arranged that one point of the same shall coincide with that of the screw, the opposite point being formed to suit the bevel on the shaft, so that on tightening the screw the shank becomes secured between the point of the lever and the inclined lip on the top of the hoop, and thus the blade is firmly attached to the snath, from which it may easily be removed by releasing the point of the screw from the lever.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention,.I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A is the snath.
B is the shank of the blade, having its edges slightly beveled, and having at its end a projection, g, which fits snugly into a recessin the snath. l
O is a hoop, shrunk onto or otherwise secured to the end of the snath A. On the bottom of this hoop is the lug F, for receiving the tightening-screw E. Two other lugs,aa, are formed on the side of the hoop, between which and on the central pin. 1), is the lever l), the end 6 of one arm coinciding with the point of the screw E and the end f of the other arm being shaped to correspond with the bevel of the shank B, which rests on the flat top of the hoop O, and is confined, when secured in its proper position, between the pointf of the leverD and the beveled lip c on the hoop O, the tightening of the screws E serving, through the action of the lever D, tobind the shank hard against the lip c, and the beveled edges of the latter, as well' as ofthe pointfot' the lever, preventing the shank from rising out of its place when thus bound.
lt will be thus seen, without further description, that the shank may be firmly secured to or easily removed from the hoop O on the snath with the greatest facility by the point of the screw beingsitnply forcedagainst or withdrawn from the point eof the lever, the whole arrangeinent dispensing with the necessity of boring holes in the hoop (thereby destroying its integrity) and without cutting or otherwise wounding the-portion of the snath surrounded by the hoop, both which defects are common to other scythe-fasteners.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the lever D, as applied to the hoop O, substantially in the manner herein set forth, as a means of securing the shank of the scythe to the end of the snath.
