ABRAHAM SUIDIEROV,
OF NEW YORK, N.
SETTING FOB PRECIOUS STON-EE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2c, 1918.
Application filed February 27, 1917. Serial No. 151,153.
To all 'UJ/I/OJIL it may concern:
l lo it known that l, ABRAHAM Suonsov, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, N. 'Y., have invented a new and useful Setting for Precious Stones, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is a setting for out stones and aims primarily to provide a setting in which number of small stones can be made to resemble a single large cut stone.
Other objects are to provide a setting which can be readily made up and mounted, in which the small stones can be easily placed and which will be neat and attractive in appearance.
Briefly, the invention involves the provision of a frame having an arched top and a substantially conical back, in substantial resemblance to the shape of a cut stone, said frame having openings in the top thereof in positions substantially corresponding to the planes of a cut stone of the size of the frame and relatively small cut stones seated in said openings with their faces in substantially the planes of a cut stone the size of the frame. The back of the frame is left open usually by the provision of longitudinal slots, in the planes of the rear facets of a cut stone the size of the frame, the effect being on the whole that of a single cut ston the size of the frame.
In the accompanying drawing 1 have shown my invention embodied in a practical and preferred form, but changes and modifications may be indulged in without departing from the true spirit and scope of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention as applied to a finger ring.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the same.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the setting taken substantially on the plane of the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Figs. 5 and 5 are sectional views of the top and back portions of the frame before being united.
Figs. 6 and 7 are plan views of the back and the top respectively before they have been shaped.
The frame which comprises the body or base of the setting is shaped to correspond generally to the configuration of a cut stone, that is, with a substantially arched top 10 and a substantially conical or pyramidal back ll. In the particular construction herewith disclosrd the topand the back are made as two separate parts which are stamped to shape, and then secured together at their edges as shown in Fig. 3. The top is made from a flat disk 12 which is arched up into the form shown in Fig. 41-, and the back is made from a. star-shaped blank 13 like that shown in Fig. 6 which is depressed at the center to give it the substantially pyramidal shape shown in Fig. 5. The two parts are then united by bringing the points of the star shaped member into engagement with the rim of the top and securing them by means of solder or the like indicated in Fig. 3. The frame thus produced is in the nature of a cage having the general configuration of a cut diamond or other precious stone.
The top is provided with openings 14 forming seats for the relatively small cut stones 15. The seats are so disposed that when the stones are in place they will occupy positions corresponding to the table and facets of a cut stone of the size of the setting frame-in other words the face of each cut stone represents one face of a cut stone the size of the frame. These stones may be secured in. place by suitable means such as striking up tangs 16 engaging over the edge of the stones.
The frame is left open at the back so as to expose the backs of the relatively small cut stones. In the illustration openings 17 are left between the arms of the star shaped blanks and in addition these arms are shown longitudinally slotted as indicated at 18. These slots are located in the planes of the seats in the top of the setting as shown in Fig 2, so that from the side the backs of the stones may be seen through these slots, this serving to produce the effect given by the back of a cut stone. This effect is further heightened by punching a relatively small opening 19 in the center of the back, this serving to give the effect of the so called hole in the back of a cut diamond.
The cluster construction as above described constitutes a single unit which while made of relatively small stones resembles a single large cut stone, the frame being usually made of platinum or other white metal. which when polished, shows off the stones without itself being too prominent.
In mounting the cluster in a ring for instance, the cluster is preferably so set that the effect of the rear facets on the back of a cut stone.
I claim:
A jewel setting comprising a top member having a plurality of passages therethrough forming jewel seats, a plurality of downwardly extending convergent arms symder'the center of said top member the space between said arms and said top member being unobstructed, said arms each being 1011- gitudinally slotted, the slot extending almost but not quite from one end to the'other, those partsof thearms on opposite sides of the slots being bowed outwardly away from each other to form a plurality of curved light reflecting surfaces.
