Description

J. DINHOFER.
GEM SETTING.
APPLICATION FILED OCT- 21, I919.

INVENTOR JZJILZLJ ii 1 %RNE UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
JULIUS DINHOFER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GEM-SETTING.
Application filed October 21, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs DINHOFER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gem-Settings, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in a novel setting for precious stones and the like, whereby a plate is arranged in a special contour and in which may be mounted a single small stone, or a plurality of small stones, so 'arranged that they closely resemble a single large stone of particular outline.
A further object of my invention is to provide a setting so arranged and disposed so that when the same is mounted in a ring, pin, brooch, or other article of jewelry, the same will closely resemble a single stone of a star-shaped configuration.
lVith these objects, and other objects which may hereinafter appear, in view, I have devised the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the claim appended hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a parthereof, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a gem set ting constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the setting.
Throughout the various views of the drawing. similar reference characters designate similar parts.
In the preferred embodiment of my in-.
vention, illustrated .in the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates the plate in which the gem 2 is mounted. The plate herein shown is in the general form of a six-pointed star, although it will be obvious that the same may be of any particularly star shaped form or any form having a broken or serrated ed e or outline.
The gem 2 is preferably held in place in the plate by means of prongs 3. which are struck up from the body of the plate. I have shown but one gem 2 mounted in the plate, but it will be obvious that the plate Specification of Letters Patent.

may be arranged so that it will have a number of openings in which a plurality of small stones may be set. The plate is preferably of platinum, and highly polished, so that its brilliancy will readily blend with the gem or gems mounted in it, and create the appearance of a single large stone of star shaped contour.
The plate may be substantially fiat or very slightly convex with its convex surface uppermost.
Attached to the under side of the plate, and depending downwardly therefrom is a wire framework 4 which has its wires so arranged that the frame work closely resembles the facets on the under face of a gem.
The framework is of the same outline as the plate 1, and lies co-extensive therewith, that is, the points of the framework 4 contact with and are attached to the points on the plate 1.
The framework consists of a plurality of diverging wires 5, which diverge from the axis 9 of the setting, and then converge as at 6 to form a plurality of points 7 which are equal in number to the points 8 on the plate, and which attach to the points 8.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a setting so arranged that it resembles a single large stone of star shaped outline and which, by reason of its construction, is a strong substantial article.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
In a setting of the character described, a plate having a serrated Outline, a gem held in said plate, a framework of wires attached beneath said plate and depending downwardly therefrom, said framework having a plurality of points, the outline of said wire framework being coincident with the outline of the plate when viewed along the axis of the setting from either side thereof. with the points of the wire framework coinciding with. and attached to the points on the plate.
Signed at the city. countv and State of New York, this 30th day of September 1919.
JULIUS DINHOFER.
