Be it known that citizen 'of theUnited States, residing at 8678 Bay Park Way, in the city of New York,- borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings,and State of New York, have invented certain new and Vuseful Improvements in Patch-Applying Mechanism for Window-Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for manufacturing the wellknownftype of envelop known as'the outlook" or window envelop, wherein an opening is formed in the` body of-the envelop blank and a likey material is secured over the opening so'that the address which -isplaced on the inclosure in such manner as to register with the opening, can readily be seen through the transfer strip placed over the opening.
This machine relates tothe steps in the manufacture of this type of envelop where! in the envelop blank, which has been already formed by other machines or proc esses, is gummed, folded and the patch of applied over the address opening. A recess 62 is formed in the under p0rtion of the bed plate 4S and an aperture G3 extends through the plate 52 above the recess. The racked bar 57 passes through this aperture and into the guiding portion of the guide bar 6l, which is secured beneath the bed plate 52, below the recess 63 and extends through the4 aperture 62, the guide bar having bearings 65 carrying the shaft 66. This shaft 66 is mounted to rotate in a bracket 6i' secured to the edge of the bed plate t8, and is provided with a pinion 66a 'which engages the racked bar 57 and through which the bar is raised or lowered. The sha tt 66 is also provided wit-h a turning knob il at its end. At 69 is a ratchet wheel a 1d at 70 a spring pressed dog which engages with' the teeth in the ratchet wheel. rl`his arrangement permits, b v thev turning of the shaft 66, the'step by step or graduated raising of the table 56 which supports the laver of patches. To lower the patch carrying plate 56, the dog 70 is freed from the ratchet 69, which allowsof the plate being lowered to the desired point. As shown in Fig. 6. the opening in the bed plate 4S is of sufficient dimension to allow bodily adjustment.
The pinion 66a is connected to thel shaft by a feather and spline or an7 like well known means so that the. shaft 66 can move bodily through the bearings in the guide 64 and bracket 6T and the racked bar and parts directly associated with it` mav be moved bodily in the direction of the length of the shaft 66, if desired, when the plates 5l and 52 are adjusted. l Mechanism for lifting a patch from the pile.
The cage 58 is provided with an upright 71, in which is pivoted a collar T2 which carries a tubular rod T3 provided at its forward'end with a downwardly bent and laterally extending nipple Tl provided with a plurality, preferably twoI` holes T5 leading to the Vinterior of the tube. As shown in Fig. 2, this nipple extends crosswise and substantially over the patch 55, and is located adjacent oue end of the same and near the gripper to be described.

the exhaustion of air and the release of the suction being synchronized with the operation of the gripping mechanism, as hereinafter described.
A spring 82 is .secured at one end to the I upright 7l and at vthe other end to the rod 73. The return or lifting movement of the connecting rod 81 lowers the grooved block, allowing the spring to tilt the rod 73.' Before this is accomplished, the nipple 74 on the rod 73 has caused one end of one of the nblank and moves it bo patches to become attached thereto, and the action of the spring 82 in tilting the nipple end of the rod, leaves one end of theupatch up, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, to a height which willl cause its forward edge tolie in patch across the face of the suctionplate under the pressure of the suction, as before described, occurs.
The sleeve 83 carries a link 85 which is in turn connected to a lever 86 in its turn heilig connected with some apertured moving part of the envelop machine which will give it an Oicillatory movement properly timed'A in connection with the gripping action of the gripper mechanism and the sucking action of'the folding plunger.
The sleeve 83 is provided with an arm or projection 87 projecting laterally of the sleeve and out toward the cage 58. The projecting arm has flanges 88. These flanges carry a rod 89 upon which is mounted a. A

The drawing indicates two points of contact of the frame with the patch, one.at the point where 'the lever engages a patch substantially :along the longitudinal center thereof, andthe other at or 'adjacent the inner edge of the patch. This two-point contact will prevent the patch from becoming skewed. The inner contact is a. resilient one, so that the forceful pressure of the finger 91 lieved, thereby avoidingfinjury to the patch, atthe same time preventing the`patch from slipping. y
Also, in the operation of the machine, if the bearin s of the parts immediately con nected -witi the gripping device, especially over the shaft 89, become worn, which has a tendency to disaline the gripping surfaces of the gripper in two or more directions,1the iesiliently controlled gripper compensates for this wear and vmaintains a uniform area of gripping surfaces for the patchi-egardless' of the amount or direction yof the normal wear of the parts.

In an envelop machine, the combination With a patch table, means for lifting a` patch from said table, a frame, a carriage movable on said frame, a pair of grippers on said carriage for engaging the lifted patch, a rod pivotally mounted in the carriage, one of said grippers being mounted upon said rod, a stop adjacent one end of the frame, mechanism connected to said pivotal rod for engagement by said stop whereby the grip'y pers are caused to engage' the lifted patch, a stop adjacent the other end of the frame for causing the pivotal rod to -pivot'and separate the grippers Vwhereby the patch carriedby said grippers is released.

In' an envelop machine, a creasing. plate and `a plunger ada-pted'to coperate with the same to crease an envelop blank, a folding bed to which the blank is transferred by the plunger, the plunger haiing a recess for holding a patch, and means for causing air suction'through said plungerto hold the patch in the recess while the blank is being transferred to the folding; bed by the plunger, said 4,means acting to cause the patch to be applied tothe blank when said when said blank reaches the supporteneath blank reaches the folding bed.
