To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD F. LAFOREST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the -county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Beds and Cribs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combination bed and crib and the principal object of the invention is to provide'a combination article of the device described which can be adjusted to different lengths, thus permitting the crib and bed to be adjusted as the child grows.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means for adjustably connecting the sections of the bed and crib so that they may be securely held in adjusted position. Another object of the invention is to so connect the sections that there will `be no danger of their accidentally coming apart while. the bed is in use.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved bed and crib with the crib suspended ready for use. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the bed and crib; Fig.

3 is a sectional view through one of the side rails to show the manner of securing thev rails in an adjusted position; Fig'. 4 vis a .fragmentary plan view of the slats which are intended to be connected with the bed when the crib is removed, certain portions of the side rails being shown in sections; Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the end portion of one of the side rails, shown in Fig. 4, to show the device for removably connecting the slats with the head and foot of the bed.

The bed comprises the head and foot which are formed from the corner posts 10 and central posts 11 which are connected by the upper and

lower cross bars

12 and 13 and intermediate cross bars 14. The corner posts 10 are connected by the

side rails

15 and 16 and the central posts are connected by the central rails 17 and 18. The rails 16 and 18 are provided with longitudinally extending ribs 19 which are dove-tailed in cross section, as shown in Fig. 3 and are slidably mounted in under-cut grooves 20 formed in the

rails

15 and 17.

Set screws are carried by the rails 15 and engage the ribs 19 of the rails 16 so that after the rails have been adjusted to the proper point to cause the bed to be the proper length, these set screws may be tightened to hold the rails in the adjusted positions. The rail 17 has not been provided with .a set screw since it would be inconvenient to reach the same, but it is` obvious that if so desired a set screw can be provided for this rail.

The crib which is intended to be swung from hooks 22 carried by the central posts 11 is provided with end walls formed from the corner posts 23 which are connected by theupper and lower end bars 24 and 25, the upper and lower end bars being connected by the bars 26. The side walls for the crib comprise upper and

lower rails

27 and 28, the rails 28 being slidably connected with the rails 27 by the dove-tailed tongues which slide in under-cut grooves formed in the rails 27. Set screws 30 similar to the set screws 21 are provided so that these rails can be held in an adjusted position. Bars 31 similar to the bars 26 are provided for the side walls. The lower bars 25 of the end walls carry inner rails 32 and 33 which are slidably connected by dove-tailed tongues 34 and carry slats 35, thus forming the bottom for the crib. VKIt should be noted that the tongues 34 extend substantially at right angles to the tongues 29, and that, therefore, these tongues form bracing means for each other. The rails 32 are not provided with set screws since these would be in the way and could not be conveniently reached. Screw eyes 36 are carried by the upper cross bars 24 for pivotally connecting the crib with the hooks 22 carried by the central posts 11.

It will thus be seen that a crib has been provided which can be adjusted longitudinally and which is pivotally supported by a bed which may also be longitudinally adjusted Whenever the crib is adjusted. When the child has grown to such a size that a crib is no longer used, the crib is removed from the bed and the bed will then be -used in the ordinary manner by placing a spring and mattress upon a set of slats carried by the bed. This set of slats comprises two sections, each having side rails 37, the side rails of one section being provided with grooves 38 to receive the dove-tailed tongues 39 of the second section, thus permitting the slats to be adjusted according to the adjustment of the bed. These side rails which are provided with end plates 40 ,carrying suspending hooks il1 are connected by cross bars 42 which support the spring. The hooks 41 engage the lower cross bars 13 thus removably connecting the yslats With the bed frame. This construction of the slatslpermits the bed to be adjusted eve after the crib has been removed.

.A device of the character described comprising a support including end pieces, rails extending from said end pieces and slidably connected, fastening means for said rails to releasably connect'the same and hold said EDWARD F. LAFOREST.
