- the pocket match-case F may be manufactured out of various materials, but in the drawing it is represented as being made out of sheet metal. It is constructed so as to form a narrow box, on, whose inner chamber is a little longer than the matches. The opening of this box is at one of the narrow ends. On the outside of the box, at one of its wide sides, are two projecting strips, b b, each forming a groove, and which are closed at the bottom end. Between these grooves is to be placed a piece of igniting-surface. One of said strips, 1), serves also to hinge lid 0. The lid 0, by moving on its hinge, can close as a cover upon the the igniting-surface, and in such position the lid, by its projecting flange d, closes the box. By lifting the lid from the ignitingsurface the box is opened, and the matches may be readily taken out and ignited.

IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,627, dated August 29, 1871; antedated August 24, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L. OTTO P. MEYER, of Newtown, county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in the Manufacture of Pocket Match-Cases for the Safety-Match; andthe following is a specification thereof.
To render my safety-match convenient for carrying in the pocket, it became desirable to invent a pocket match-case constructed so as to be suitable for affixing to it a piece of igniting-surface, (specially prepared surface for igniting the match and my invented and constructed matchcase hereafter described answers the aforesaid purpose.
The Plate IV contains the perspective view of the match-case F, embodying my invention. The pocketcas'e is represented as opened, and as havinga piece of igniting-surface affixed to it. The geometrical drawing of the same case is a view with igniting-surface removed. Figure 1 is afront elevation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation, section at the dotted line m m. Fig. 4 is a plan. Fig 5 isa sectional plan, section at the dotted line n n.
The pocket match-case F may be manufactured out of various materials, but in the drawing it is represented as being made out of sheet metal. I claim as my invention The combination of the box a, the strips b b, and the lid 0 with its flange d, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
