Description

,nm'rnn feral-Es PATENT onnion.
FRANK lVI. PHILLIPS, OF BEVERLY, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNO R 0E. ONE-HALF TO LEONARD RIGGLMAN, OF BEVERLY, WEST VIRGINIA. I I
, MATCH-30X.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom itmag concern Be it known that I, FRANK M. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Randolph and .State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes,
of which the following is a specification.
I The present invention relates to improvements in match boxes or safes, and the object of the invention is to simplify and improve theexisting art by producing'a match ox" which will absolutely protect the.
matches therein against moisture or ignition; and which is providedwitha sliding member whereby the matches maybe singly In the drawing :Figure Iis a perspec-' tive view of a match box constructed 1n accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking toward the bottom of the box and showing the slide in its extended position. Fig. 3 is an approximately central vertical transverse sectional view through the device illustrated in Fig. 1, but
taken in a line with the tongue 20. Fig. 4
is a longitudinal sectional view approximately on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the body of the box, the cap or closure as well as the slide being removed therefrom, and Fig. 7
is a perspectiveview of the sliding receptacle. Fig. 3, but showing the slide in its open match receiving position.
My improved matchbox preferably constructed of metal, but, of course, other material may be employed if desired, the same including a box proper, indicated by the numeral 1. The box includes a bottom 2, sides 3, and what I will term a back 4, thus the said box is provided with an open top as well as an open front. The sides have their upper and if desired, their lower I edges provided with outturned flanges 5, the said flanges adapted to receive the inturned flanges 6 provided upon the opposite ends of a plate 7 which closes the open top of the box. What I will term the rear edge of the closing plate 7 is provided With an Fig. 8 is a sectional view, similar to' angular flange 8, the said flange abutting Patented A r.14.],191e."
the back 4 of'the .box 1, thus limiting the I sliding movement of the said closing plate 1n o'ne d1rection. The opposite edge of the said plate is centrallyfformed with cirscribed. 1 Preferably the sides 3 are formed upon their inner faces with reinforcing members 10, the said members having their lower edges spaced a slight but suitable'disso =cular cut-away portlon or depression '9, the purpose of which will presently be detance above the bottom 2.. These spaces provide ways for the bottom plate 11 of a slidable receptacle '12. The slide also includes an outer face-l3, a top 14: which is of front face of the box 1. The slidable member 12 also includessides 15 whichare prefless width than the bottom plate 11, the
outer face 13 providing a closure for the bers 10, so serving as a guide for the slide as well as a means forv normally. retaining the slide within the box. The lower or bottom plate 11 of the slide at one of the sides 15 I thereof is formed with a longitudinally extending slot or cut-away portion Y16, and the face 13 as well as said bottom 11 are formed with a depending channeled portion providing a pocket or receptacle for a single match arranged in a line with the slot 16.
The bottom 2 ofthe'box is provided with a gut-away portion 18 to receive the depend- 1ng pocket17, and the said bottom, at'the end of the out-away portion 18 is closed adjacent the open end of the pocket member 17 and is formed with a depending portion providing a lug 19, and the said lug is adapted to serve as a closure for the said pocket when the slide is forced within the box 1. The bottom 2 of the box is further provided with an outwardly extending tongue formed upon the longitudinal edge provided by the cutaway, portion 18, thesaid tongue, indicated by the numeral 20, being disposed adjacent one of the sides of the box and is projected through aslot 21 in the pocket 17, while the end of said tongue is provided with an offset portion 22 which serves as a means for limiting the movement lation to the box, when the slide is moved to permit of a single match entering the pocket 17 as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawing. 7 It 1 of the slide in an' outward direction with re- I will be apparent that when the box is filled with matches and the sides of the same are held between the forefinger and thumb 01: one hand of the operator, and the box canted or tilted at the outer edge thereof, the forefinger and thumb of the second hand of the operator may grasp the top 14: between the cut-away portion 9 of'the closure 7 as Well as the inner face provided by the pocket 17 and so slide the pocket outwardly of the box.
It will be noted that when the slide is moved to its open position, the offset end 22 of the tongue 20 will contact with the inner wall of the pocket 17, thus permitting a match to drop within the said pocket.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
the simplicity of the device, as well as the Gopies of this patent may be obtained for member in the box and closing the side,
means for limiting the outward movement of the sliding member upon the box, said slidable member having one of its corners provided with a longitudinally extending depending portion forming a pocket and the portion of the slide beyond the said depending portion being open.
3. A match box including a substantially rectangular member having an open side, a slidable member arranged'within the side, said slide being provided with a depending portion forming a channeled pocket closed at one end and having its other end open, :1 lug upon the box, disposed to close the opening of the pocket when the slide is moved inwardly of the box, a tongue extending from the box and entering the pocket and having its end offset, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
