WILLIAM S. LUCKETT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOX OR CARTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 11915.
Application filed October 19, 1914. Serial No. 867,436.
To all whom it may concern:
5 Be it known that 1, WILLIAM STONE LUCKETT, a citizen of the United States, re-' siding-in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have,
invented certain Improvements in Boxes or Cartons, OfWlllCh the following is a specification.
My invention relates to packages or original containers for cigars, cigarettes and similar articles; and the object of my invention is to provide an improved form of box or carton, simple in construction, efiicient in action and of relatively small cost, which box may be sealed by the Government stamp when employed with articles made wholly or partly of tobacco; such box being further provided with a window or viewing point whereby the contents of the box can be seen, thereby permitting an intendingpurchaser to inspect the color of the goods, in the case of cigars for instance, before purchase A further object of my invention is to provide a box or carton of the shell and slide type, salable when filled with vendlble goods as an original package, which may be subsequently employed as a case or protective carrier for the cigars or other goods while in the pocket of the purchaser, and which will not require elongation to effect opening of the same as is commonwith ordinary boxes of the shell and slide type. And a still further object of my invention is to provide an external sleeve-like member, slidable with respect to the box or slide, which sleeve-like member 1s n iovable to operative and inoperative positions within the limits or length of the box or carton, whereby the latter may be closed and maintained in a closed position by said sleeve-like member, or placed in a condition to permit access to the goods by displacing said sleeve-like member.
These and other features of my invention are more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1,-is a perspective view of one form of complete box or carton made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, is a perspective view showing the box or carton illustrated in Fig. 1, in the open position; Fig. 3, is a perspective view of another form of box or carton within the scope of my invention, in the open position; Fig. 4, is a sectional view on the line 44, Fig. 1; F g. 5, IS a sectional view on the line 55, Fig. 1; ,F 1g. 6, is a sectional view on the lne 6 6 Fig. 3; Fig. 7, is a view of a blank from which the form of box or carton shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5, is constructed, illustrating also the various creases and cuts necessary to be made in the same in order that it may be shaped into a container in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 8, 1s a view of a blank from which the box shown in Figs. 3 and 6 is made.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to the blank shown in Fig. 7, 1 represents the portion to form the back wall of the box; 2, 2 the sides of the same; 3 the fixed portion of the front wall of the box, and 4 the movable portion of the front wall. Below the fixed portion 3 of the front wall is an extended portion 5 to form the base of the box, with a portion 5 to be inturned and fastened to the rear wall 1 in the usual manner common to the manufacture of boxes of this type. The movable portion 4 of the front wall carries a portion 6, integral with and in line with said movable front wall, which portion 6 forms the top of the box or carton and is provided with a flap 6 in line therewith and adapted to be tucked in the box over the top of the goods, as illustrated in Figs. '1 and 4.
To form the movable front portion 4, the blank is cut at 7, 7, at the junction lines of said front portion and the side walls 2, 2 and scored or creased as indicated at 8, and by preference the flap to be turned in over the goods is carried by this movable front; the box or carton being secured together by fastening the marginal side portions 2 together, and the bottom or base portion 5 to the rear wall 1 by gluing the same or by other suitable means. When assembled. such box is a substantially single-walled structure as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with a movable portion at the front and top of the same whereby access to the goods may be had; the top proper of which movable portion has a flap for insertion behind the goods and which will normally be retained in place by such goods. This movable front as well as the top portion of the flap may be fastened to the box by a seal, or in the case of articles partly or wholly of tobacco,
' tion 4: of the front wall, and cover such opening or window with a sheet of thin paper disposed on the inside of the box, as indicated at 12.
The form of blank shown in Fig. 7, is intended for production of boxes or slides of the type shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5, in which the movable portion permitting access to the goods contained within the box is carried by the fixed portion of the front wall.
In Figs. 3, 6 and 8, I have shown a form of box in which the movable portion per mitting access to the contents of the box is carried by the rear wall of the same. The blank from which this structure is made is clearly shown in Fig. 8, from which it will be seen that the movable front 4 is formed as an integral extension of the back 1 to which it is connected by the top 6; such front having an extension 4 which may be tucked inunder the fixed portion 3 of such front when the structure is in a closed condition, as illustrated in Fig. 6.
For the purpose of maintaining the box or carton in a closed condition and the movable front in proper position to retain the goods in place, I provide a sleeve-like inclosing\band or support 15 slidably mounted on the box or container and normally positioned over the movable front of the same and over the window or opening in said front through which the contents of the box or carton may be viewed. This slidable sleeve-like band may carry advertising matter indicative of the contents of. the box, and the name, if any, of the particular goods contained in the box or carton, and provides eflicient means whereby the movable front of the box will be maintained in the proper relative position with respectto the goods to hold the same securely within the box or carton when the latter is carried in the pocket. This sleeve-like band is narrow, and is movable on the box or carton, preferably within the limits or length of the same; holding the movable front in place when up, and permitting movement of such front to gain access to the goods when down. The frictional contact of this sleevelike band with the box or slide is such that there is little or no danger of it being accidentally wholly withdrawn from the box when being moved up or down.
The sleeve-like member is preferably made of cardboard or stiff paper of substantially the same Weight as the box or carton so that it will provide a sufficiently stiff backing or support for the'movable portion of such box whereby access to the goods contained therein is obtained. It may be fastened in place my gluing one of its terminal ends over the other, or such ends may be secured together by any suitable metal fastening available for the purpose; the essential point being to hold it suiiiciently tight to Secure the desired frictional contact with the box or carton that will prevent its accidental displacement when in use.
Although I have illustrated a structure holding five cigars for instance, it will be understood that the goods contained in the box are not limited to any particular charactor, to any number, or to any size or shape; the construction and arrangement of the box or carton being the same no matter what its contents may be or their quantity.
In my improved construction I am enabled to provide all the advantages of boxes or cartons of the shell and slide type, with a great economy in the amount of material employed in the construction of the same; the short slidable sleeve-like member taking the place of the shell and being movable topermit access to the goods without lengthening the structure; the movement of such sleeve-like member being substantially, if not wholly, within the leiigth of the box embraced thereby.
I claim."
1. The combination with a box or carton of the slide type having a movable Wall section to permit access to goods contained within the same, of an external sleeve-like member slidably mounted with respect to the box and adapted to hold the movable wall section in closed position, said sleevelike member being less in width than the length of the box and lying substantially within the longitudinal dimensions of the latter in its open and closed positions.
2. The combination with a box or carton of the slide type having a movable front wall section integrally hinged to the back of such box and movable to permit access to goods contained Within the same, of an external sleeve-like member slidably mounted with respect to the box and adapted to hold the movable front wall in closed position, said sleeve-like member beingless in width than the length of the box and lying substantially within its longitudinal dimensions in the open and closed positions.
3. The combination with a box or carton having a movable wall section to permit access to goods contained within the same and a viewing aperture in one of its walls, of an external sleeve-like member slidably mounted With respect to the box" and movable to cover said viewing aperture and hold the movable Wall section in closed position, said sleeve-like member being less in Width than the length of the box and lying substantially Within the longitudinal dimensions of the latter in its open and closed positions.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
W. S. LUCKETT.
