Description

STEPHEN J. JAMES, or 'sEAEoEn DELAWARE.
. EDUCATIONAL APPLIANCE.
Application'led February 19, 1.915. Serial No. 9,357.
To all whom #may concern."
Be it known that I, STEBHEN J. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seaford, in the county of Sussex and State of Delaware, have invented new and useful Improvements in Educational Appliances,-
of which the following is a specification. g This invention relates to educational apf pliances, and it has particular reference to a device combining a pencil box or case with a calculating device for addition and multiplication. j l
The invention has for its object to produce described comprising a box or case equipped with a calculating device and having pockets or recesses in which pencils, pen holders and the like may be placed for safe keeping.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction and assemblage ofthe parts constituting the invention.
With these and other ends in viewwhich will readily appear as the nature ofthe inl5.315 vention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.` In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the recise structural details therein exhibited,
` ut-that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired. A In the drawing,-Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved device with the 40 lid of the box thrown open. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal sectional view taken through the device with the lid closed, said'view being taken through, the axis of the cylinder of the calculating device. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional viewA taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2. Fig. Il, is a sectional view taken through the line 4 4 in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the surface of a calculating cylinder.
are denoted by like characters of reference. The box 15 has a flanged lid 16 connected therewith by means of hinges 17, the free edge of the lid being provided with a catch 17 adapted to engage a latch or lock 18 associated with the box for the purpose of Corresponding parts in the several figures retaining the lid in closed position. The box is provided with a longitudinal partition 18 having separate compartments, one of which, 19, will constitute apocket in which pencils and the like may be kept. Said pocket may be4 subdivided if desired. The other recess or pocket 20 serves to accommodate a cylinder 21 which is supported for rotation in the end walls of the box, said cylinder having adjacent one end a circumferential iange 22, said flange having preferably a milled edge so that it may be utijlized for conveniently .rotating the cylinder. a simple and eiicient device of the character The cylinder 21 is covered by a sheet 23 of metal, cardboard, veneer or other suitable material, said sheet being secured on the top edges of the rear and end walls of the box and also the top edge of the partition member 18. Said sheet is provided with two elongated rectangular slots 24, 25 and with an intermediate slot or sight opening 26. Adjacent to the lower edge of each of the slots 24 and 25 are inscribed the numerals from 1 to 10, inclusive. The face of the cylinder is inscribed about midway between the ends thereof with a circumferential series of numbers from 1 to 10, inclusive, said i Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV, 23, 1915i.
numbers being visible, when the cylinder is rotated, through the sight opening 26. On the face of the cylinder between one end thereof andthe central circumferential row of numbers there is inscribed longitudinal and circumferential rows of numbers, any one of which exposed adjacent to a number on the cover sheet will give the sum of such number plus the number exposed through the sight opening 26. On the face of the cylinder between the circumferential row of figures visible through the sight opening 26 and the other end of the cylinder are inscribed circumferential and longitudinal rows of figures any one of which exposed through the slot 25 opposite to any one of 4the row of figures adjacent to said slot will indicate the product of `such figure and the numeral which is at the time exposedthrough the vsight opening 26. Reference to Fig. 5 of the drawing will at a glance indicate how the numbers inscribed on the cylinder are tabulated with the foregoing ends in view.
rIhe flanged lid 16 has-been shown as being provided with a longitudinal partition 28 alining with the partition 18 in the body of the box and serving to prevent the contents of the compartment 19 from rubbing 4appliance which is serviceable not only as a receptacle for pens, pencils andthe like, but
by means of which the problems of addi-j tion and multiplication tables maybe quickly and easily solved.
Having Vthus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is v 1. A device ofthe class described comprising a rectangular box having a longitudinal partition forming two longitudinal compartments, a cylinder supported for rotation in one compartment and having a flange whereby it may 'be rotated, and a cover sheet secured onfthe top edges of the reary and end walls of the box and of thev longitudinal partition, 'said sheet having. sightv openings through which parts of the cylinder are exposed, and a flanged lid the box and having a longitudinal partition alining with the longitudinal partition inI the body of'the box; the cover sheet being provided adjacent to some of the sight openings withnuinerals from 1 to 10, inclusive,
inscribed thereon, there being an additional 'intermediate sight opening, and the cylinder being inscribed circumferentially adjacent to said intermediate sight opening with numerals from l to 10, inclusive; a portion of the cylinder visible through one sight opening adjacent to which numerals are inscribed being inscribed with longitudinal andv circumferential rows of numbers, any one of which exposed adjacent to any number on the cover sheet will give the sum of such number plus the number exposed through the intermediate sight opening; and a portion of the cylinder visible through the other sight opening adjacent to which numbers are inscribed being inscribed with circumferential and longitudinal rows 'of figures, any one of which exposed through the sight opening opposite to any-one of the rows of gures adjacent to said 'opening will indicate the product of such figure and the exposed figure.
' 2. Adevice of the class described comprising' a rectangular box having a longitudinal partition forming two longitudinal compartments, a cylinder supported for rotation in one compartment and having a iian e whereby it may be rotated, and a cover s eet secured on the top edges of the rear and end walls' of the box and of the longitudinal partition, said sheet having sight openings through which parts of the cylinder are exposed, the cover sheet `being provided adjacent to some of the sight openings with numerals from l tov-10, inclusive, inscribed thereon, there being an additional intermediate sight opening, and the cylinder being inscribed circumferentially adjacent to said intermediate sight opening with numerals from l to 10 inclusive; a portion of. the cylinder visible through one sight hingedlyv connected with the, rear wall of opening adjacent to which numerals are inscribed being inscribed Vwith longitudinal and circumferential rows of numbers, any
one of which exposed adjacent to any number on the cover sheet will give the sum of such number plus the` number exposed through the intermediate sight opening; and a portion of theV cylinder visible through the other sight opening adjacenttov which numbers are inscribed being 1nscribed with circumferential and longitudi- .nal rows of `gures anyone of which exin presence of two witnesses.
