SEWING-MACHINE GUIDE.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUBERT M. Gamer, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Guides, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw- 1ng.

This invention relates to a sewing machine guide adapted to be supported from the resser-bar of the machine and which is provided with right and left hand openended slots the inner or guiding ends of which overlap each other in the line of the feed of the work in such a manner as to en able two pieces of lace or other material to be guided to the needle in overlapping positions so that they may be stitched together. The improved guide is also preferably provided, between the right and left hand slots, with a closed slot through which a piping strip may be guided to the needle in such a manner that a strip of lace or other material may be attached to either the right or left edge of the said piping strip, according to whether the strip of lace or other material be guided through a right hand or left hand slot. The improved guide, in its preferred form, comprises a plurality of open-ended right and left hand slots of different depths, so that the inner ends thereof will overlap, more or less, a central line which may be considered to be the line of stitching. By reason of providing these slots of differing depths the strips of material guided to the needle may be caused to overlap each other more or less, according to whether deeper or shallower slots be utilized for guiding the strips.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved guide mounted in operative position on a presserfoot. Fig. 2 is a plan view and Fig. 3 a side view of the same.

Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes the body of the guide which is preferably provided with an integral shank portion 13 by which it may be attached to the shank portion of the presser-foot 1 1. To this end the said shank portion 13 of said guide is provided With a key-hole slot 15 the larger portion of which is adapted to pass over the head 16 of a clamping bolt mounted on the presser-foot, the latter being adapted to be attached to the presser-bar of a sewing machine in a well-known manner. The clamping bolt by which the improved guide is secured to the presser-foot is, or may be, similar to the clamping bolt shown in United States Patent No. 900,067, dated Sept. 29, 1908. The body 12 of the improved guide is provided with a slot 18 which is so located as to register with the needle-hole 19 in the presser-foot, but perinitting more or less lateral adjustment of the guide relative to the presser-foot when the nut 17 of the said clamping bolt is loosened.

Extending inward from the left hand side of the improved guide, in the form of the invention herein shown, are two open-

20 and 21, the slot 21 being slightly deeper than the slot 20. In front of the slot 20 is a closed slot 22 through which a piping strip may be guided if desired. Extending inward from the right hand side of the improved guide are two

open'ended slots

23 and 24, the slot 2:1 being somewhat deeper than the slot 23. It will be observed that the inner or guiding ends of the right and left hand slots overlap each other, more or less, in the line of stitching or in a line extending rearward directly toward the center of the needle-hole 19 in the presser-foot, so that the edges of two strips of fabric, one guided by a right hand slot and the other by a left hand slot, will overlap each other as they are guided to the needle. By employing slots of different depths the strips of material which are to be guided to the needle may be caused to overlap each other more or less, as may be desired. If, for example, it be desired to guide two pieces of lace or other material to the needle with their edges overlapping but very slightly, the two strips of material may be guided through the

20 and 23. If, however, it be desired to cause imilar strips to overlap each. other to a somewhat greater extent the

21 and 23 may be utilized for guiding the two strips of material; and if it be desired to have this overlapping still further increased the

Also if it be desired to secure a piping strip to a strip of material either one of the slots may be utilized in connection with the piping guide slot 22, according to whether it be desired to attach the strip of the material to the piping strip to the left hand or to the right hand edge thereof, and according to the depth to which it may be desired to have the piping strip project beyond the edge of the strip of material to which it is to be attached. or

While the invention, in its preferred form, will comprise a plurality of open-ended right and left hand slots of difierent depths the inner or guiding ends of which overlap each other in the line of stitching, it will be understood that the improved guide may comprise only a single pair of open-ended, overlapping right and left hand slots; Also while it is preferred to provide the guide with the integral attaching shank 13, provided with the key-hole slot 15, it will be understood that the improved guide may be otherwise constructed for attachment to a sewing machine. 7

Having thus described my invention I 7 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A sewing machine guide comprising a body portion provided with a needle open in and with a plurality of both right and left hand, open ended slots of different depths in front of said needle opening, the lnner ends of said right and left hand slots overlapping each other in the line of stitch mg. A sewing machine guide comprising a body portion provided with a needle opening and with a plurality of both right and left hand, open ended slots of different depths in front of said needle opening, the inner ends of said right and left hand slots overlapping each other in the line of stitching, the said body portion of said guide being also provided with a closed piping strip slot located between the said right hand and the said left hand slots. 7 V Y '3. The combination with a sewing machine presser-foot having a needle-hole, of a sewing machine guide, and clamping means by which said guide may be attached to said presser-foot so as to be laterally adjustable thereon, said guide comprising a body portion provided with a needle slot registering with the said needle-hole of the presser foot, and with a plurality of both right and left hand open-ended slots of different depths in front of said needle slot, the inner ends of said right and left hand slots overlapping each other in theline of stitching.

4. The combination with a sewing machine presser-foot provided with a needlehole, of a sewing machine guide, and clamping mean by which said guide may be attached to said presser-foot so as to be lat erally adjustable thereon, said-guide comprising a body portion provided with a nees dle slot, registering with the said needlehole of the presser foot, and with a plurality of both right and left hand open-ended slots in front'of said needle slot, the inner ends of said open-ended slots overlapping each other in the'line of stitching, the said body portion of said guide being also provided with a closed piping strip slot located between the said right hand and the said left hand slots.
