SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application mea July 2a, 1912. serial ne. 710,917.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, lsAnoRE KAUF-MANN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing'l at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New llersey, have invented certain new` and useful lmprovements in Safety- Razors; and I do -hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which -it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to safety razors and has for an object to provide a razor in which the greatest number of cutting edges are possible. i l
An object of this invention is to provide a device to hold a number of blades and which blades are adjustable or variable in a holder so that each of the four edges of each blade may be brought into cutting relation with respect to the holder.
A further object of this invention is to provide a ldevice capable ofusing elongated rectangular blades of reduced size which blades may be fitted on the holder'so that one of the long edges of all four blades are exposed for cutting and the ends of two of the blades are exposed to coperate with the long edges of the other two blades.
A further object of this invention is a provision of means for conveniently holding the above-mentioned elongated blades in such a way that the'blades may be' easily applied and removed for rearrangement.
4Further objects will be apparent from the following pecication, appended claims and drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of one of the yblades used in connection with this device,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the guard member with four blades positioned thereon, Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the upper member which coperates with the guard member in holding the blades in position, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the razor as on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates a blade having the elongated opening 11A therein and also having each of the four edges sharpened as at 12. The guard-comprises a plate 13 having the edge thereof notched as at 14 and said guard being provided with the elongated openings 15 tof correspond with the openings 11 in the blade and which openings are so positioned as to cause the blades secured to the guard to assume the position shown in Fig. 2 in which an elongated edge of each of the blades is exposed for cutting and the endseof the end .blades are in alinement with the cutting are interchangeable with respect to the guard so as to permit all of the edges to be used for cutting purposes in their turn.`
Coperating with the guard 13 is the plate 16 having the lugs 17 depressed therefrom and a threaded stem 18 depending from the middle thereof, the elongated lugs 17 being adapted to pass through the opening 11 of the blades 10 and the opening 15 'of the plate 13 whenthe device is assembled and through the opening 19 in the plate 13 and to engage the threaded socket 2O of the handle 21. The handle 21 has a flaring threaded stem 24 carried by the handle portion 25. As. this device is extremely simplein its the several parts and I am aware that various modifications may be`made withinthe scope of my invention and the drawings have been4 submitted for villustrative purposes only.
claim:
1. ln a safety razor, a rectangular guard having each of its edges notched, elongated slots adjacent to and parallel with the central portion of each of said edges, a rectangular clamping plate yhaving elongated lugs formed thereon to register with the slots .in the guard plate, a threaded stem depending from said clamping plate to receive a handle in combination. with a rectangular cutting edge oomprisin a set of small rectangular, interchangeab e and reversible blades having each of their four edges sharpened to a cutting edge and arranged so that one long edge of each of the blades is exposed and the short edges of two of the blades are in alinement with and form a continuation of the long cutting edge /f the other two blades.
2. In a safety razor, a rectangular cutting member composed of a set of smaller 'reversedge of the side blades'and which blades.
shoulder 22 'at the upper end thereof and, the threaded socketl 23 in the lower end. -which socket is adapted to receive thel Having thus described my invention, I
the lug or stem 18 is adapted to pass operation it is apparent from the foregoing as to the operation and adjustment of Y ible, elongated blades having each of their four -edges sharpened', the ends of two of said blades contacting with the sides of tw'o other blades to present a continuous rectangular cutting edge.'
3. In a safety razor, a rectangular cutting member formed of a set of reversible elongated blades having each of their four edges sharpened, said bladesbeing assembled by 10 having one long edge of. all the blades eX- posed and the ends of two of said blades exposed, the adjacent short ends and elongated edges presenting a continuous edge.
In testimony whereof I aliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISADORE KAUFMANN.
