Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1912.
Application filed May 3, 1909, Serial No. 493,694. Renewed March 15, 1912. Serial No. 684,007.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD HENRY TAT- Low, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in match-safes and more particularly to that class of safes which are adapted to be hung on the wall.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a construction which will receive a full box of matches, and also means whereby the matches may be readily removed one at a time from the safe.
Another object of my invention is to provide a burnt match compartment which is of a suflicient size to receive all the burnt matches without requiring them to be placed therein in an orderly manner.
A still further object is to provide a common cover for both compartments and which may be removed and replaced with case.
This invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the in vention with one corner of the top slightly broken, showing the manner of hanging the safe on the wall. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cover which is removed from the safe. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a modified form with the cover removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cover.
Let the numeral 1 designate the safe in its entirety which is composed of a back 2, sides 3, bottom 4 and a partition 5, which divides the safe into two compartments 6 and 7, for good and burnt matches respectively, the compartment 7 being larger than the compartment 6. The front edges of the sides 3 are bent parallel with the back 2 in the form of flanges 8 and serve the purpose of guides for the reception of the cover 9 which forms the top and front of the safe. The top is adapted to slide between the guides 8 and the ears 10 formed on the back 2 of the safe for hanging the same upon the wall or elsewhere. A lug 11 is stamped up from the 6 with matches the cover upper side of said front piece near the front edges thereof for removing and replacing said piece.
When it is desired to fill the compartment 9 is removed, which is composed of the top 12 and the front 13 of the safe, then the box 20 of matches 19 are placed in the said compartment and the cover replaced.
The front 13 of the cover has formed therein an opening 14; which extends the entire length thereof, terminating in its upper extremity in a recess or slot 15 formed in the front 13, and in its lower extremity in a recess 16 formed in the bottom 13 which may be called a thumb recess. The opening 14 is to allow the finger to be inserted in the compartment 6 in order to grasp a match which is withdrawn therefrom by bringing one extremity of the match through the slot 15 after which the entire match may be withdrawn. Continuing the operation the match is then scratched on the rough surfaces 17 and after being used is placed in the burnt match compartment 7 through the opening 18 formed in the top 12.
Fig. 3 shows a modified form of my invention which is preferably used in cigar stores, etc. In this construction the entire body of the safe is made from a single piece of material, which is bent to form a front 21, sides 22, backs 23, a partition 24 which is folded upon itself, a bottom 25 which is an extension of one of the sides 22 and a flange 26 formed on one of the sides 22 and which completes the front 21. The front and top have openings corresponding to those disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2, and the matches are removed in the same manner. The cover shown in the modified form however is somewhat different and consists only of the top of the safe. It slides horizontally instead of vertically, and is secured in place by extensions 27, 28 and 29 in the form of flanges which constitute a channel in which the top may slide. The top has an upturned lug 30 on one end for a finger hold, and besides the burnt match opening there is a cigar cutter in connection therewith which may be of any well known construction.
The construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is used in houses where most of the cooking is done with gas stoves, while the modified form may be used in cigar stores, hotels, etc.
I do not wish to be confined to the constructions herein shown and described but claim all constructions Within the scope of the annexed claim.
What I claim is:
A match safe comprising a double compartment receptacle having an open face and top, a front and top formed in one piece, flanges on thesides of said receptacle forming a runway for said front piece, said front piece having an opening over one compartment too small to permit extraction of matches and having a peculiarly formed in presence of tWo Witnesses.
