Abstract

A piston and cylinder unit comprises a cylinder barrel (6) closed at both its ends by end caps (7) and has a piston (8) sliding axially within it connected with a piston rod (9) extending through at least one of the end caps (7) so that the piston rod (9) may move through a packing in the cap in the longitudinal direction (19). The cylinder end (7 and 21) having the piston rod (9) extending through it, has a sealing device (22), which comprises a gas-tight peripheral wall (23) which surrounds at least part of the length of the piston rod portion (24) extending out of the cylinder barrel (6) with play. The wall defines a header space (29) since it is connected at one of its ends (25) hermetically with cylinder (5) and furthermore at the other end (26) it is joined hermetically to the piston rod (9). The header space (29) has a port (30) to be connected with a venting duct (32). <IMAGE>
