In the image and sound equipment, a sound field mode automatic selecting method of a surround system includes the steps of: detecting sound information data for music genre or program type in a sound signal received from a broadcasting station or in the sound signal to be reproduced by itself; comparing sound information data detected in the above detecting step with sound information data detected just before; outputting a control signal for selecting a proper sound field mode, in case that compared sound information data do not accord; judging whether the signal applied form a key input unit is in a state for automatically selecting the sound field mode, after receiving the control signal applied in the above step; and automatically selecting a corresponding sound field mode to switch it, if it is in the state for automatically selecting the sound field mode.
