Description
The present invention relates generally to data processing systems, and more particularly to interfaces to independent computer systems. More specifically, the present invention relates to using a second independent computer system as an input / output interface of a first computer system.
예를 들어, 휴대용 전자 장치는 다른 컴퓨터 시스템에 접속하여 데이터 및 소프트웨어에 액세스할 수 있다.Currently developed portable electronic devices include portable digital assistants (PDAs), portable cordless phones, portable electronic record tablets, portable e-book devices, personal portable game systems, and various other devices that can be designed to be portable. . Basically, portable electronic devices are computer systems designed for specific purposes. Most portable electronic devices do not include all the hardware features of large computer systems, such as desktop and laptop computers. In particular, large computer systems have larger memory capacities and higher processing power than portable electronic devices. As such, many portable electronic devices are designed to connect with other computer systems in any manner. For example, a portable electronic device can connect to other computer systems to access data and software.
A typical portable electronic device is a personal digital assistant (PDA). PDAs often include ports for connecting to large computer systems loaded with PDA-specific software. The user can enter the address directly into the PDA or enter a large computer system running PDA specific software. When a large computer system receives a request to synchronize data with a PDA, it compares the data on the PDA with the PDA data entered into the large computer system and transmits the data to synchronize the data between the systems. Synchronization between data on PDAs and data for large computer systems is a convenient feature. However, there is a need to provide additional interfaces between large computer systems and PDAs. For example, there is a need to use input interfaces and input processing available on PDAs as inputs in large computer systems. In addition, while PDAs provide many functions independently to users, PDAs must enhance the functionality of large computer systems. For example, enhanced security is required when accessing data on large computer systems, in which case a PDA can be used as a key to access the data of the computer system.

Inside the portable electronic device docking space 56, the portable computer system 50 may establish a connection with the portable electronic device via an electronic, infrared, or other form of data transfer connection. In addition, within the portable electronic device docking space 56, the computer system 50 may establish a power connection with the portable electronic device. Alternatively, the portable electronic device docking space 56 may only provide structural support for the placement of the portable electronic device, and the portable electronic device may provide a cable or other type of connector regardless of the portable electronic device docking space 56. Establish a data and power connection to the computer system 50.
Referring now to FIG. 3, shown is a block diagram of a computer system having an external docking system for a portable electronic device, in accordance with the methods, systems, and programs of the present invention. As shown, a computer system 60 similar to the computer system 10 of FIG. 1 includes a display monitor 62 and a keyboard 64 as peripheral devices.
In addition, portable electronic device interface 66 may be accessed from computer system 10. The portable electronic device interface 66 may include a fixed port or additional hardware connected to the port. The portable electronic device interface 66 may be configured to connect with various types of portable electronic devices. In addition, the portable electronic device interface 66 may provide two functions to the portable electronic device, data connection and power supply. In alternative embodiments, computer system 60 may support multiple portable electronic device interfaces. In addition, the portable electronic device interface may be built into another peripheral device such as a keyboard or a monitor.
Referring now to FIG. 4, shown is a block diagram of the computer system of FIG. 2 with a portable electronic device as an input device, in accordance with the method, system, and program of the present invention. As shown, portable electronic device 75 is inserted into computer system 50. Features of the portable electronic device 75 include an input key 77, a handwriting recognition surface 78, and a touch screen 79. In alternative embodiments, the portable electronic device 75 may include other features. Input key 77 includes, but is not limited to, depressable keys, scroll tools, and other adjustable keys. The handwriting recognition surface 78 may detect a handwritten symbol, and in this case, the portable electronic device may convert the handwritten symbol into letters, numbers, or other characters. The touch screen 79 detects the applied pressure and movement. The portable electronic device 75 converts the position of the pressure applied to the touch screen 79 into a cursor control input.
Preferably, portable electronic device 75 may switch between multiple modes while being inserted into computer system 50. The user may provide an input to the computer system 50 or the portable electronic device 75 to request an operating mode. As an example, the user can press one of the input keys 76 to select one of the operating modes. Each time the input key 76 is pressed, the portable electronic device 75 cycles to the next mode. In either of these modes, the portable electronic device 75 may be set to an input / output mode, in which case the input received on the portable electronic device 75 is not an input for operating the portable electronic device 75. It is received as an input for controlling the computer system 50. In addition, in the input / output mode, the portable electronic device 75 receives information from the computer system 50 and outputs it through the output interface.
During the input / output mode, the function of the portable electronic device 75 for processing input and output is still needed. In the input / output mode, for example, a symbol detected on the handwriting recognition surface 78 is converted into a character by the portable electronic device 75, and as an input by the electronic computer system 50, for example, as from a keyboard or a voice input tool. Is received. In another example, the pressure and movement detected on the touch screen 79 are converted into cursor controlled movement by the portable electronic device 75, such as by a computer system 50, such as from a mouse or other cursor control device. Received as input. As will be appreciated, in alternative embodiments of the present invention, the portable electronic device 75 may provide another type of interface, with inputs to the interface being converted by the portable electronic device 75 and from the peripheral device. It is sent as input to computer system 50. Also, as will be appreciated, computer system 50 may transmit output data to portable electronic device 75, in which case any output interface of portable electronic device 75 may be available in computer system 50. Can be used as part of another peripheral output interface.
If the portable electronic device 75 is operating in a synchronization mode, the computer system 50 may also synchronize data with the portable electronic device 75, download the data to the portable electronic device 75, Data may be uploaded from the portable electronic device 75. Software running on computer system 50 may provide an interface for inputting data that may be synchronized with data on portable electronic device 75. In addition, computer system 50 may access software and data through a network connection, and may download the software or data to portable electronic device 75. Conveniently, because computer system 50 supports docking of multiple portable electronic devices, computer system 50 may synchronize data between each of the devices.
Many portable electronic devices use rechargeable batteries. The computer system 50 may charge the portable electronic device 75 while the portable electronic device is inserted into the portable electronic device docking space 56. Charging that may occur simultaneously with the operation of the portable electronic device 75 is one of the aforementioned modes of operation. However, computer system 50 needs to manage when charging is available. For example, if computer system 50 is also only discharging battery power, computer system 50 may stop recharging unless the user requests recharging.
In addition, as a security measure, computer system 50 includes an operating mode only while computer system 50 is operating if an authenticated portable electronic device is inserted in portable electronic device docking space 56. As such, portable electronic device 75 may function as a key to access computer system 50. In particular, portable electronic device 75 may be the only input device that is permitted to access computer system 50.
The portable electronic device 50 may be identified, for example, by a security identification number in a processor disposed therein. In addition, multiple authenticated portable electronic devices may be selected for key access to computer system 50 according to identification numbers, user names, or other criteria. In addition, portable electronic device 75 may function as a key unless the user is allowed to access only certain software and data accessible from computer system 50. In addition, when a non-certified portable electronic device is inserted into a computer system and used, the computer system 50 will try to find out whether the owner of the computer system has logged in to the network from another computer system and send a message indicating unauthorized use.
Alternatively, in order to implement security in access to the computer system 50, the computer system 50 may provide the user with security of the portable electronic device 75 before it is granted access to the computer system 50. You may be required to pass the requirements. For example, a security function for access to the portable electronic device 75 may include matching a finger scan or other biometric input. By implementing secure access to the computer system 50 in accordance with the security features of the portable electronic device 75, updating only the portable electronic device allows for advanced security technology.
Referring now to FIG. 5, shown is a block diagram of the computer system of FIG. 2 with a portable electronic device as an input device, in accordance with the methods, systems, and programs of the present invention. As shown, the portable electronic device 85 is connected to the portable electronic device interface 66 via an electronic, infrared or other form of data transmission link. In addition, the portable electronic device 85 may be connected to the portable electronic device interface 66 to receive power. Computer system 60 will interact with portable electronic device 85 in a manner similar to the interaction between portable electronic device 75 and computer system 50 described with reference to FIG. 4. For example, the user can switch between operating modes by pressing input key 76.
The portable electronic device 85 includes a speaker 87, a keypad 88 and a microphone 89. Preferably, the portable electronic device 85 can be set to an input / output mode, in which the input to the portable electronic device 85 is not an input intended to independently control the operation of the portable electronic device, but rather the computer system 60. May be received as input to. In addition, the output data detected by the portable electronic device 85 is received as information for output through the output interface of the portable electronic device 85. For example, in the input / output mode, computer system 60 will recognize portable electronic device 85 as a peripheral such as a microphone, speaker system, and keypad device.
In addition, in the input / output mode, the portable electronic device 85 may be required to process and convert data for input / output. For example, portable electronic device 85 may include a voice recognition feature for voice dialing purposes. During the input / output mode, the portable electronic device may implement a voice recognition feature to match the speech with the voice input stored in the portable electronic device. Voice input represents a person's name that may be sent to the computer system 10 as text input of the name. In the message delivery program, computer system 10 may match its text name with a message delivery address and initiate a network in accordance with communication with that person. As will be appreciated, in alternative embodiments both the functionality of the portable electronic device 85 and the input / output devices are available in the computer system 60.
Referring now to FIG. 6, shown is a high level logic flow diagram of a process and program for controlling a portable electronic device in accordance with the method, system and program of the present invention. As shown, the process begins at block 100 and then proceeds to block 102. Block 102 illustrates determining whether the portable electronic device has detected a docking or connection with the main computer. If it is determined that it is not connected, the process repeats at block 102. If it is determined to be connected, the process proceeds to block 104.
Block 104 is a determining step regarding the type of the received input when the input was received. If a synchronization request is received, the process proceeds to block 106. In block 106, a synchronization is initiated between the portable electronic device and the main computer by sending a synchronization signal to the main computer. The main computer and portable electronic device will then transfer the data, including software downloads from the main computer system to the portable electronic device, and the process ends.
If an input / output request is received, the process proceeds to block 108. Block 108 illustrates setting the portable electronic device to an input / output mode. In the input / output mode, the portable electronic device receives an input as an input interface to control the main computer. In addition, in the input / output mode, the portable electronic device receives a signal from the main computer as an output signal for the output interface. Next, block 109 illustrates sending the input / output mode signal to the main computer so that the main computer recognizes the portable electronic device as an input / output interface, and the process ends.
If a charge request is initiated, the process proceeds to block 110. Block 110 represents initiating a connection with a power source and the process ends. If power from the main computer is not available, the process may initiate a warning output to display the user not charging.
Referring now to FIG. 7, a high level logic flow diagram of a process and program for controlling a main computer in accordance with the method, system and program of the present invention is shown. As shown, the process begins at block 120 and then proceeds to block 122. Block 122 illustrates detecting a connection or docking with the portable electronic device. The process repeats at block 122 until a docking or connection with the portable electronic device is detected, and then proceeds to block 124. Block 124 illustrates determining whether the computer system is operating in a device authentication mode. If the computer system is operating in the device authentication mode, the process proceeds to block 126; otherwise, to block 130.
Block 126 shows determining whether the device identification information matches the authentication identification information. Device identification may be performed by matching security identification information and authentication identification information of a processor within the portable electronic device. In another example, the user needs to provide biometric input that matches the authentication biometric information. If the identification information does not match, the process proceeds to block 128 and the main computer becomes unavailable. Alternatively, if the identification information does not match, the use of certain software and data in the main computer is blocked. If the identification information matches, the process proceeds to block 130.
Block 130 shows a determining step regarding the type of input received from the portable electronic device when the input is received. If a synchronization start signal is received, the process proceeds to block 132, where the main computer initiates synchronization of the selection data between the portable electronic device and the main computer, and the process ends.
At block 130, if an input / output mode setting signal is received, the process proceeds to block 134. The input received from the portable electronic device is then received as an input for controlling the main computer. The main computer outputs data to the portable electronic device for output through the output device of the portable electronic device.
Further, in block 130, if a charge request is received, the process proceeds to block 136. Block 136 is a determination step as to whether an external power source is available to the main computer or whether there is sufficient power to charge the battery of the portable electronic device from the power source of the main computer. If no power source is available, the process ends. When the power source is available, the process proceeds to block 138. Block 138 represents using power in the portable electronic device, and the process ends.
