Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce sintered diamond for a tool at a low cost by mixing a binding phase consisting of one or more among Fe, Co, Ni and Cr and Mn with diamond particles having graphitized specified parts and by sintering the mixture at a specified high temp. under a specified high pressure. CONSTITUTION:Powdery diamond of 0.1-200mu average particle size is heated to a high temp. of >=1,400 deg.C in vacuum or in a nonoxidizing atmosphere to graphitize a part or the whole of the surface. A mixture consisting of 70-99wt.% of the resulting diamond as starting material and the balance binding phase made of an alloy or compd. consisting of 40-80wt.% Mn and the balance one or more among Fe, Co, Ni and Cr is put in an ultra-high pressure producing device and sintered at <=1,200 deg.C under an ultra-high pressure under which diamond is stable. A sintered diamond cutting tool having cutting capacity comparable to that of a conventional sintered body produced with expensive Co as a binder is produced at a low cost.
