Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a sintered diamond tool at a low cost by mixing an alloy or compd. consisting of one or more among Fe, Co, Ni, Cr and Mn and B, Si or P with diamond powder and by sintering the mixture at a specified high temp. under a specified high pressure. CONSTITUTION:A mixture consisting of 70-99wt.% artificial diamond particles of about 10mum average particle size and the balance binding phase for the diamond particles consisting of one or more among Fe, Co, Ni, Cr and Mn and B, Si or P is press-molded, put in an ultra-high pressure producing device and sintered at <=1,200 deg.C under an ultra-high pressure under which diamond is stable. The amt. of the binding phase used is 1-10wt.% in case of B, 1-25wt.% in case of Si and 1-15wt.% in case of P. High strength sintered diamond for a cutting tool, etc., is produced at a much lower cost than the conventional cost without using expensive Co as an essential binder.
