Abstract

PURPOSE:To compress the redundancy of a transmitted stereoscopic picture and to simplify the constitution of the titled method, by defining at least one of those pictures photographed in plural directions as a reference picture to obtain the differentials between this reference picture and other ones and forming a stereoscopic picture based on the reference picture and the differential picture. CONSTITUTION:The picture signals received from a right eye camera 2a and a left eye camera 2b are supplied to the A/D converters 27a and 27b respectively and converted successively into digital signals for each picture element. The output of the converter 27a is supplied to one of two inputs of a differential device 9; while the output of the converter 27b is supplied to the other input of the device 9. The device 9 calculates the differential component between the picture signals outputted from both cameras 2a and 2b from each picture element. Thus the same picture areas of both right and left eye pictures are deleted by the device 9 and therefore never transmitted. As a result, the pictures of the same position are not transmitted. Then it is possible to compress the information value compared with the conventional technique.
