Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the symmetry of a color display panel and to improve the display grade thereof by constituting said panel of 4-color picture elements consisting of three primary color picture elements added with colorless picture elements. CONSTITUTION:The liqid crystal panel 5 making a color display is constituted of 4 kinds of the picture elements; red picture elements (R)6, green picture elements (G)7, blue picture elements (B)8 and colorless picture elements (W)9. These picture elements consist of the color picture elements of the three primary colors red, green and blue plus colorless picture elements. Since the picture elements are constituted of 4 kinds in the above-mentioned manner, the degree of freedom in the picture element array is considerably increased and particularly the array in which the picture elements of the same colors are vertically or laterally continuous can be easily avoided. An example is taken here of the red picture elements R: Said elements consist of the array where the lower right and upper left picture elements are continuous with each other and the array in which the upper right and lower left picture elements are continuous with each other. The elements are not symmetrical on the right and left when the local part such as two horizontal lines is viewed but the straight lines of the same picture elements declining toward the right and the straight lines declining toward the left exist when at least >=4 horizontal lines are viewed. The lateral symmetry is thus improved.

[Detailed Description of the Invention] [Technical Field] The present invention relates to a color arrangement structure of a liquid crystal panel that performs color display. However, a regular A-S pattern appeared in the displayed image, significantly degrading the display quality. The prior art will be explained below with reference to the drawings. Fig. 1 is an example of a conventional color display liquid crystal panel and shows a color arrangement structure of three primary colors. In the figure, 1 is a liquid crystal panel that performs color display, and is made up of a set of red pixels 2, green pixels 5, and blue pixels 4.0 In the case of an arrangement of three colors like this, the screen inevitably has rules. Two patterns of sexuality appear. In the case of the example shown in FIG. 1, pixels of the same color are lined up diagonally and in a straight line, so a straight line pattern going downward to the left appears on the screen, making the asymmetrical regular pattern very noticeable. To avoid this, symmetry can be obtained by arranging the same color vertically, but the vertical line pattern stands out more than the diagonal line pattern, making it impractical.

In order to avoid an asymmetric regular pattern, if the arrangement of each color is made irregular, when the pixel elements are composed of only three colors, there will always be some consecutive pixels of the same color, and this part will stand out sharply. This also cannot be put to practical use. In a liquid crystal panel, if the pixel size is made smaller and the number of pixels is increased, the number of lines leading out from the pixel electrode must be correspondingly increased, so there is a limit to the reduction in pixel size.

As described above, in color display liquid crystal panels composed of pixels of only three colors, asymmetrical regular patterns or continuous patterns of the same color caused by adjacent pixels of the same color significantly degrade display quality and are a major cause of hindering commercialization. Hereinafter, the present invention will be explained in detail based on examples. Figure 2 is a diagram showing the arrangement of each color pixel of the color display liquid crystal panel of the present invention. In Figure 0, 5 is a liquid crystal panel that performs color display. , consists of four types of pixels: red pixel (represented by (R)) 6, green pixel (represented by G) 7, blue pixel (represented by B) 8, and colorless pixel (represented by W) 9. has been done. As is clear from the figure, in the present invention, red
The major difference from the conventional model is that it is constructed by adding colorless pixels to the three primary color pixels of green and blue.
By reducing the number of constituent pixel elements to four in this manner, the degree of freedom in pixel arrangement is greatly increased, and in particular, it has become easy to avoid arranging pixels of the same color in succession vertically or horizontally. Furthermore, in the example of Fig. 2, if we focus on the red pixel R, it consists of a continuous array of lower right Φs upper t + pixels and a continuous array of upper right and lower left pixels, and is divided into a periodic part such as two horizontal lines. If you pay attention to it, it is not symmetrical, but if you pay attention to at least four horizontal line segments, there are right-down straight lines and left-down straight lines of the same pixel, and the left-right symmetry is significantly improved.

As described above, in the present invention, the degree of freedom in pixel arrangement is improved, and an arrangement as shown in FIG. 3 is also possible. That is, FIG. 3 shows a color display liquid crystal panel as another specific example of the present invention, which differs from the example shown in FIG. 2 in that there is no diagonal continuity of pixels of the same color. In this example, it goes without saying that horizontal and vertical symmetry is maintained focusing on pixels of the same color, and there is no continuity between the left and right or the top and bottom. In addition, the colorless pixels mentioned in the above explanation are always black or gray. Needless to say, it is not limited to a certain pixel, but also includes gray pixels whose brightness changes depending on the luminance signal. Although such a structure in which colorless pixels are included in the constituent pixels has existed in the past in image pickup tubes, this structure is intended to facilitate the separation of luminance signals and color signals, and is completely different from the purpose and principle of the present invention. They are different.

As described above, the present invention uses a simple method of adding a colorless pixel to the constituent pixels, so it is possible to significantly improve the image display quality without increasing the cost. This will greatly contribute to the practical use of television.
