Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent slag inclusion and to produce an ingot of good quality by installing a pair of electromagnetic stirrers of specific length in specific positions near the meniscus on the long sides of a mold. CONSTITUTION:Electromagnetic stirrers 2, 2' give horizontal rotating flow to the molten steel in a mold 1, and the legnth thereof is slightly shorter than the long side length of the mold 1. They are installed near the upper stream side of the molten steel flow in the mold 1 respectively. Hence, the velocity of flow of the molten steel in the mold accelerated by the stirrer 2 is fairly decelerated in one corner part (b) of the mold 1 because the stirrer 2 is not installed across the long side of the mold. This decelerated molten steel is again accelerated by the other stirrer 2', after which it is again decelerated in the other corner part (a), and from this point on, the similar cycles are repeated and the molten steel is uniformly and electromagnetically stirred in a horizontal direction. Thereby, the slag inclusion into the molten steel near the meniscus is prevented.
