PURPOSE:To facilitate tracking control over a head while increasing recording density by storing data on a track starting at the outer circumferential part of a disk and a directory on a track starting at the inner circumferential part. CONSTITUTION:A data recording track 2, starting at the outer circumferential part of a disk 1, is formed spirally toward the inner circumference, and a directory recording track 3, starting at the inner circumferential part of the disk 1, is formed spirally toward the outer circumference. In this case, newly recorded data are recorded, as the word length of the recorded data varies, in succession to the terminal position of the last recorded data. Right before both the tracks 2 and 3 meet together, namely, at the point where an unrecorded part ends, the formation of the tracks is completed, utilizing the storage capacity at a maximum. Further, a head starts access at an unrecorded area, so track access is facilitated.
