PURPOSE:To improve the coloring efficiency by forming an electrochromic (EC) layer on the 1st substrate with WO3 and an EC layer on the 2nd substrate with IrOn or the like so as to see the colors of both the EC layers in superposition. CONSTITUTION:An electrically conductive transparent film 12 and a WO3 layer 13 are formed on the 1st transparent substrate 11 in order. An electrically conductive transparent film 15 and an IrOn or Rh2O3 layer 16 are formed on the 2nd transparent substrate 14 in order. An electrolytic soln. 17 is held between the layers 13, 16 and sealed 18 to obtain an EC display device. By applying a voltage so as to make the layer 13 negative and the layer 16 positive, both the layers 13, 16 form colors simultaneously, and by reversing the polarities, the colors are erased simultaneously. When the colors are erased, both the layers 13, 16 become transparent. Thus, the colors of the layers 13, 16 are superposed to improve the coloring efficiency, and high optical density is obtd. with low power consumption.
