Abstract
PURPOSE:To achieve highly reliabile detection of tool defects by eliminating the influence of noise by transducing mechanical oscillation into an electric signal, and performing envelope detection and then detecting a fault on the basis of the absolute value of a detected envelope. CONSTITUTION:An acoustic emission AE sensor 1 is arranged at a cutting tool 2 and then detects and transduces generated ultrasonic-wave oscillation into an electric signal, which is applied to a filter 6 through an operational amplifier 3, a setter 4, and an operational amplifier 5. A signal from the filter 6 is amplified by a main amplifier 7; a part of the output of the amplifier is outputted to a monitor output terminal 9 through an output amplifier 8, and the remainder is led to an envelope processing circuit 11 through a switching circuit 10, thereby outputting an envelope liquid to a meter 12 and a comparator 13. The level of the set value of a level setter 15 is adjusted by a signal outputted through an oscillator 16, a level setter 17, the switching circuit 10, and the envelope processing circuit 11. The output of the comparator 13 is converted by an A/D converter 18 into a signal 1, which is applied to a counter 19, whose output is compared by a comparator 20 with the count value of a setter 21.
