Abstract

PURPOSE: To accomplish accurate reading of the magnetic mark of a magnetic scale by detecting with a head a high frequency AC output of an ultrasonic area between a recording medium given a magnetic mark and a magnetic mark detection head.
CONSTITUTION: A high frequency power source 54 drives magnetostrictive vibration coils 52 and 52' through an arithmetic circuit 56 and a servo circuit 59 to generate a fixed amplitude of magnetostrictive vibration in leg sections 51-2 and 51-2' of a core 51. The magnetic fields generated in coils 51-2 and 51-2' invariably cancels each other in a main working section 51. But, when a magnetic mark exists between a pair of detection terminals 51-3 and 51-3', an output signal from a detection coil 53 activates an up/down counter 58 to indicate a tape position through a preamplifier 55 and an arithmetic circuit 56. This allows accurate reading of the magnetic mark of the magnetic scale.
