Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the drivability on a slope by designing the overdrive control device such that the gradient of the road on which a vehicle is running is determined on the base of a detection of acceleration of the running vehicle and a detection of sliding of a torque converter, and in accordance with the determination, the overdrive of a transmission is released.
CONSTITUTION: When the vehicle is running on a flat road with a transmission position switch 30 operated in D range, an electromagnetic valve unit 40 is controlled through a transmission control circuit 70 based on the outputs from an engine speed detector 10 and a throttle switch 20 so that the vehicle can travel at an appropriate transmission position. If the vehicle speed enters a high speed range with an overdrive switch 50 closed, an overdrive solenoid 41 is supplied with power from the above-mentioned circuit 70, thereby shifting the vehicle drive into an overdrive condition. If the vehicle begins to ascend a sloped road in this state and an output is provided from a gradient detector 60, the solenoid 41 is deenergized by an overdrive releasing circuit 80, thereby releasing the overdrive condition of the vehicle.
