Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve performance of purification and collection by a method wherein a honeycomb structure in which foamed ceramic is inserted is arranged in the flow of the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine.
CONSTITUTION: The honeycomb structure 1 in which the foamed ceramic 2 is inserted is fixed in the passage of the exhaust gas. Minute particles of carbon in the exhaust gas A are collected by the foamed ceramic 2 and purified by the burning heat of a burner 20. Since the honeycomb structure 1 is prepared by making ribs 1a and the foamed ceramic monolithic, it has excellent mechanical strength and vibration-resisting property. The insertion of the foamed ceramic 2 increases mutual actions of a catalyst and the exhaust gas, whereby the performance of purification and collection can be improved.
