Abstract
PURPOSE: To eliminate a main cause for an unfavorable flange portion form and stabilize production of the title glass by holding a peripheral portion of flat plate glass between dies; heating the display section of the glass to below the softening point and the flange portion to the softening point or above; and press-forming the glass.
CONSTITUTION: Flat plate glass 8 cut into predetermined size is placed on carbon lower die 6, and frame-like carbon middle die 5 is put on glass 8 so as to hold a peripheral portion of glass 8 between dies 6, 5. Metal upper die 7 for pressing provided with an upper flange is set on a glass 8 portion corresponding to the glass display face section and contacted to the glass surface. The peripheral portion is then heated to the softening point or above, e.g. about 800°C with heating source 9 in a nitrogen gas atmosphere and the display section glass to the softening point or below. Glass 8 thus heated is press-formed. A conventional defect, unfavorable deformation due to contraction of the flange portion is eliminated, and the flange portion of cover glass for a display tube can be formed uniformly.
