This invention relates to corrosion inhibiting compositions for use in alcohol fuels and normally liquid hydrocarbon fuels containing alcohol. The present invention also relates to alcohol fuels and alcohol-containing normally liquid hydrocarbon fuels having improved corrosion inhibition properties by containing the above-mentioned corrosion-inhibiting compositions. Alcohol fuels and usually liquid hydrocarbon fuels containing alcohol used in spark ignition and compression ignition internal combustion engines have strong corrosive activity. This strong corrosive activity is generally attributed to the reactivity of the alcohol, and in some cases, for example in the case of ethanol, to the presence of acidic and halogen ion-containing contaminants. That is, alcohol is particularly damaging to various non-ferrous metals and metal coatings, such as, for example, tin-lead alloy coatings used on the interior surfaces of fuel tanks and zinc-aluminum alloys used in carburetor construction. As a result, automobiles using alcohol fuels or normally liquid hydrocarbon fuels containing alcohol have a strong tendency to corrode in the areas of their fuel tanks, fuel lines, and fuel induction systems. US Pat. Nos. 4,282,007 and 4,282,008 relate to corrosion protection in alcohol fuels and hydrocarbon fuels containing alcohol, such as gasoline. The former patent discloses an additive consisting of the reaction product of aminotriazoles and polyisobutenylsuccinic anhydride, and the latter patent discloses an additive consisting of the reaction product of aminotriazoles, isatoic acid, and N-
Reaction products with alkylpropylene diamines are disclosed. It is an object of this invention to provide other corrosion inhibiting additives for use in alcohol fuels and normally liquid hydrocarbon fuels containing alcohol. It is also an object of the present invention to provide alcohol fuels and normally liquid hydrocarbon fuels containing alcohol containing such anti-corrosion additives. Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide alcohol fuels and normally liquid hydrocarbon fuels containing alcohol that are characterized by improved corrosion protection. In its broadest sense, this invention relates to an alcohol fuel and a composition for use in a normally liquid hydrocarbonaceous petroleum distillate fuel containing alcohol, the composition having the formula (A) (wherein R 1 is a hydrocarbon group containing about 8 to about 18 carbon atoms, and R 2 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group containing about 8 to about 18 carbon atoms) At least one phosphoric acid compound represented by the formula (B) (where R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 are independently hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to about 3 carbon atoms, and R 7 is hydrogen or 1 to about 20 carbon atoms) and (-R 8 O)- x R 9 groups (where R 8 is 1 to about 20
x is 1 to about 10, and R 9 is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 1 to about 6 carbon atoms). morpholine compounds and formulas (groups selected from the group) (Here, R 10 is a hydrocarbon group containing 2 to about 10 carbon atoms and further contains at least one hydroxyl group, and R 11 is a hydrocarbon group containing 1 to about 20 carbon atoms. Hydrogen group, m is 1, 2
or 3, consisting of a corrosion-inhibiting reaction product with at least one amine compound selected from the group consisting of alkanolamines, where n is 0, 1 or 2 and m+n is 1 to 3). Regarding. The present invention also provides a composition for use in an internal combustion engine comprising: (A) an alcohol having from 1 to about 5 carbon atoms; (i) about 2 to 100% by volume of a normally liquid hydrocarbonaceous petroleum fraction; Fuel (ii) a large amount of fuel containing from about 98 to 0% by volume, and (B) a small amount of the corrosion-inhibiting reaction product described above. The corrosion-inhibiting additive of this invention is an amine salt produced by the reaction of a phosphoric acid compound and an amine compound (monoamine), which will be described in detail below. As used herein, the term "hydrocarbon" or "hydrocarbon group" refers to a group having a carbon atom directly attached to the remainder of the molecule and having primarily hydrocarbon character within the meaning of this invention. is pointing to. Such groups include: 1 Hydrocarbon group. i.e. aliphatic (e.g. alkyl or alkenyl) groups, alicyclic (e.g.
cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl) group,
Aromatic groups, aliphatic or alicyclic-substituted aromatic groups, aromatic-substituted aliphatic and alicyclic groups, cyclic groups in which the ring is completed via another part of the molecule (any of the above) Furthermore, groups consisting of two or more benzene rings, and di-substituted hydrocarbon groups. That is, groups containing non-hydrocarbon substituents that do not modify the predominant hydrocarbon character of the group. Such substituents will be apparent to those skilled in the art (e.g., hydroxy,
alkoxy, carbalkoxy, etc.). The phosphoric acid compounds useful in the preparation of the amine salts of this invention have the formula (wherein R 1 is a hydrocarbon group containing about 8 to about 18 carbon atoms, R 2 is hydrogen, or a hydrocarbon group containing about 8 to about 18 carbon atoms) The partially esterified orthophosphoric acid shown. That is, the intended phosphoric acid compound has the formula

It is a monoester or diester of orthophosphoric acid shown in the following formula, or a mixture thereof. For reasons of economy, mixtures of phosphoric acid monoesters and diesters are preferred. Such a mixture can be prepared by reacting one mole of phosphorous pentoxide with three moles of a hydrocarbon alcohol having from about 8 to about 18 carbon atoms. This reaction can be represented by the following equation. Alternatively, about 2 to 4 moles of the above hydrocarbon alcohol or mixture thereof may be used per mole of phosphorus pentoxide. Generally, R 1 is an unsubstituted aliphatic group, preferably an unsubstituted alkyl group such as octyl, nonyl, decyl,
undecyl, dodecyl, tridecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl and octadecyl,
R2 is hydrogen or R1 . The alcohol used in the preparation of the phosphoric acid compound is a primary alcohol having about 8 to about 18 carbon atoms, preferably a branched primary alcohol.
An example of such an alcohol is normal alcohol derived from coconut oil. One commercially available product of such alcohols consists primarily of n-octyl alcohol and n-decyl alcohol, and another consists primarily of n-dodecyl alcohol but may contain other alcohols having from 10 to about 18 carbon atoms. There is. Preferably the alcohol is a branched primary alcohol such as that obtained by the well known "oxo" process. Examples of alcohols of this type are "oxo" octyl, decyl, tridecyl and octyl alcohols, all of which are branched alcohols derived from propylene-butylene dimer, tripropylene, tetrapropylene and pentapropylene, respectively. It is a mixture consisting mainly of chain primary alcohols. Amine compounds useful in making the corrosion inhibitor additives of this invention have the formula (where R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 are independently hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to about 3 carbon atoms, and R 7 is hydrogen or 1 to about 20 carbon atoms) and (-R 8 O)- x R 9 groups (where R 8 is 1 to about 20
x is 1 to about 10, and R 9 is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 1 to about 6 carbon atoms). morpholine compounds and formulas (groups selected from the group) (Here, R 10 is a hydrocarbon group containing 2 to about 10 carbon atoms and further contains at least one hydroxyl group, and R 11 is a hydrocarbon group containing 1 to about 20 carbon atoms. Hydrogen group, m is 1, 2
or 3, n is 0, 1 or 2, and m+n is a monoamine selected from the group consisting of alkanolamines represented by 1 to 3). In a preferred embodiment, the amine compounds useful in making the additives of this invention have R 3 , R 4 ,
R 5 and RR 6 are all hydrogen, and R 7 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group containing from 1 to about 10 carbon atoms and a (-R 8 O)- x R 9 group, where
R 8 is a divalent alkyl group containing 1 to about 10 carbon atoms, x is 1 to about 6, and R 9
is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1 to about 3 carbon atoms), and in the above formula R 10 is 2 to about 5 carbon atoms; and further contains at least one hydroxyl group, and R 11 is from 1 to about 10
is selected from the group consisting of alkanolamines, which are hydrocarbon-based groups containing 5 carbon atoms, and where m, n and m+n are as described above. The most preferred amine compound has the formula (where R 7 is hydrogen or a straight or branched aliphatic group containing from 1 to about 5 carbon atoms and a (-R 8 O)- x R 9 group, where R 8 is a divalent alkyl group containing 1 to about 6 carbon atoms, x is 1 to about 4, and R 9 is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1 to about 3 carbon atoms) a group selected from the group), as well as R 10 in the above formula;
contains about 2 to 3 carbon atoms and further contains 1
a straight-chain or branched alkyl group containing hydroxyl groups, R 11 is a straight-chain or branched alkyl group containing 1 to about 3 carbon atoms, and m, n, m+n is an alkanolamine as described above. Representative examples of amine compounds useful in making the additives of this invention and falling within the scope described above include morpholine, 4-methylmorpholine, 4-ethylmorpholine, 4-propylmorpholine, 4-butylmorpholine, 2- Methylmorpholine, 2-ethylmorpholine, 2,5-dimethylmorpholine, 2-
Ethyl-5-methylmorpholine, 2,6-diethylmorpholine, 4-heptylmorpholine, 4-dodecylmorpholine, 4-hexyldecylmorpholine, 4-cyclohexylmorpholine, 4-cyclohexyl-2,6-dimethylmorpholine, 4-cyclopentylmorpholine , 4-(3-butenyl)
Morpholine, 4-(1-hexenyl)morpholine,
4-(2-ethylhexyl)morpholine, 4-eicosylmorpholine, 4-(2-methoxy)morpholine, 4-(2-cyclohexyloxyethyl)
Morpholine, 4-(2-methoxymethyl)morpholine, 4-(2-methylpentyl)morpholine,
4-(3-methylphenyl)morpholine, 4-phenylmorpholine, 4-(2-phenylethyl)
Morpholine, monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, monoisopropanolamine, diisopropanolamine, triisopropanolamine, mono-sec-butenylamine, di-sec-butenylamine, dimethylethanolamine, dimethylisopropanolamine, diethylethanolamine, methylethanolamine, Examples include, but are not limited to, butylethanolamine, phenylethanolamine, phenylethylethanolamine, methyldiethanolamine, tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamine, and the like. The most preferred amines are selected from the group consisting of morpholine, ethylmorpholine, diethanolamine and triethanolamine. The amine salts that form the corrosion inhibitors of this invention can be prepared by simply mixing the phosphoric acid compound and the amine compound at temperatures below about 100°C. This reaction is in most cases slightly exothermic and is preferably carried out in the presence of a solvent. Solvents that have been found to be useful include hydrocarbons or polar salts such as benzene, naphtha, toluene, xylene,
n-hexane, dioxane, chlorobenzene, kerosene or fuel oil. Usually, the ratio of both reactants used to prepare the amine salt is 1 equivalent of phosphoric acid compound to 1 equivalent of amine compound so that all free amino groups are converted to the salt.
However, in some cases, only one acidic hydrogen on the monoorganosubstituted phosphoric acid may be used to generate the salt. That is, the amine salt useful in this invention is produced by reacting an amine compound with 1 to 2 equivalents of a phosphoric acid compound. The following examples illustrate the preparation of the corrosion inhibitors of this invention and the corrosion properties of alcohol fuels or normally liquid hydrocarbon fuels containing alcohol. In all examples, all "parts" are "parts by weight" unless otherwise indicated. Example 1 1000 parts (5.0 mol) of tridecyl alcohol is added to a reaction vessel equipped with a stirrer, thermometer, and reflux condenser.
I prepared it. The reaction vessel was purged with nitrogen while heating the alcohol to 35°C. Then, 248 parts (1.74 moles) of phosphorus pentoxide was added in small portions over 5 hours. The reaction was exothermic and the temperature rose to 50 °C during the addition of phosphorus pentoxide. This mixture was reacted at 60°C for 8 hours and then collected by filtration. Product is 8.5%
It contained phosphorus. Example 2 To a solution of 14.8 parts of diethanolamine in 50 parts of xylene, 35.2 parts of the product of Example 1 were added over 1 hour. The temperature of the reaction mixture rose exothermically from room temperature to 50° C. during the addition. The reaction mixture was further stirred at 50°C to obtain the desired product. Example 3 31.3 parts of the product of Example 1 in 18.7 parts of triethanol
portion was added over 1 hour. During this addition, the temperature rose exothermically from room temperature to 51°C. After adding 50 parts of xylene, the mixture was mixed for an additional 0.25 hours at 50°C to obtain the desired product. Example 4 Following the steps in Example 3, ethanolamine 9.85
1 part was reacted with 9.85 parts of the product of Example 1 and diluted with 50 parts of xylene to give the desired product. Example 5 Following the steps of Example 2, a solution of 12.95 parts of morpholine and 50 parts of xylene was added to 37.05 parts of the product of Example 1.
The desired product was obtained. Example 6 10 to 10 each of the reaction products of Examples 2 to 5
A series of alcohol fuels were prepared by mixing 450 parts with 1 million parts of hydrated ethanol containing about 7.5% water by weight. Example 7 20% by volume of hydrated ethanol containing 7.5% by weight of water
and ASTM distillation range is approximately 60℃ at 10% distillation point
Gasohol (gasohol) consisting of 80% by volume of gasoline whose distillation point is from 90% to about 205°C
A series of alcohol-containing gasoline fuels were prepared by mixing 10 to 450 parts of each of the reaction products of Examples 2 to 5 in 1 million parts. The anti-corrosion effectiveness of the above additives was tested according to Brazilian Association of Technical Norms (ABNT) Method K, Test C. In this test, various metal samples (e.g. steel, yellow steel, zinc-aluminum alloy) were
It was immersed in commercially available hydrated ethanol for 144 hours at 3°C. At the end of the test, each test was rinsed first with water, then with ketone or other suitable solvent, and then dried. After drying, each sample was weighed and its appearance was visually observed. The weight loss (if any) and appearance of this sample was then compared to that of a sample similarly treated with a control gasoline-alcohol blend consisting of 78-82% gasoline and 22-18% absolute ethanol by volume. For a corrosion-inhibiting additive to be effective, both the weight loss and appearance of samples tested with hydrated ethanol containing the additive must be 10 times lower than that of samples treated with a control gasoline-alcohol blend. % or more. The corrosion inhibitors obtained in Examples 2-5 were tested according to this method and were found to be effective. The present invention also provides a fuel composition for use in an internal combustion engine, which comprises (A) at least one alcohol having 1 to about 5 carbon atoms (i) and a normally liquid hydrocarbonaceous petroleum fraction (ii). (B) a corrosion-inhibiting reaction product as described above, that is, a group consisting of (i) at least one phosphoric acid compound as described above; and (ii) morpholine and alkanolamine as described above; A product containing a small amount of a reaction product with at least one amine compound selected from among these is provided. Alcohol fuels useful in combination with the corrosion inhibiting reaction products of phosphoric acid compounds and amine compounds described above to provide fuel compositions with improved corrosion inhibiting properties include methanol, ethanol, propanol, Commercially available alcohols such as isopropanol, butanol and its isomers, amyl alcohol and its isomers, and mixtures of these alcohols may be mentioned. Among commercially available compounds, methanol and ethanol are preferred. Alcohols in hydrated form are particularly preferred. Normally liquid hydrocarbonaceous petroleum distillate fuels useful in combination with alcohol and the corrosion-inhibiting reaction products described above include motor gasoline as specified in ASTM D439 and ASTM D396.
Diesel fuel or fuel oil is specified in Particularly preferred petroleum distillate fuels have an ASTM distillation range from about 60°C at the 10% distillation point to about 60°C at the 90% distillation point.
It is a hydrocarbon mixture with a temperature of 205°C. The fuel portion of the fuel composition of this invention has 1 to 1 carbon atoms.
about 5 at least one alcohol from about 2 to
100% by volume and about 98 to 0% by volume of a hydrocarbonaceous petroleum distillate fuel, usually in liquid form. In a preferred embodiment, the fuel portion consists of about 10 to 100% by volume of said at least one alcohol and about 90 to 0% by volume of said petroleum distillate fuel. In a further preferred embodiment, the fuel portion is about
20 to 100% by volume and about 80 to 0% by volume of the petroleum distillate fuel. Particularly useful fuel compositions are those based on a mixture of an alcohol, particularly methanol or ethanol, and a petroleum distillate fuel, particularly gasoline, wherein the mixture contains about 10 to about 20% by volume of alcohol and about 20% by volume of petroleum distillate fuel. 90 to 80
It consists of volume %. The amount of corrosion inhibitor reaction product in the fuel compositions of this invention is sufficient to impart corrosion inhibiting properties to the fuel compositions. This amount is about 10 to 1000 parts by weight of the reaction product per million parts by weight of fuel. Preferably, this amount is from about 10 to about 450 parts by weight, particularly from about 175 to about 450 parts by weight of the reaction product per million parts by weight of fuel. It should be noted that these amounts are based on the pure reaction product and not in diluted form as in the concentrates discussed below. The fuel composition of this invention can be prepared by directly adding the reaction product of a phosphoric acid compound and an amine compound to the fuel part, or by adding the reaction product to naphtha, benzene, toluene, xylene or the petroleum distillate mentioned above. It can be prepared by diluting the reaction product with a substantially inert, usually liquid diluent, such as a fuel fraction, to form a concentrate of the reaction product, and then adding this concentrate to the fuel fraction. The concentrate generally contains from about 20 to about 90% by weight of reaction products. The fuel compositions of this invention may also include other additives commonly added to liquid fuels to obtain specific benefits. Examples of such additives include anti-knock agents such as tetraalkyl lead compounds, lead scavengers such as haloalkanes (e.g. ethylene dichloride, ethylene dibromide), and triaryl phosphates. Anti-deposition agents/modifiers, dyes, octane improvers, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-
Antioxidants such as 4-methylphenol, bacteriostatic agents, gum inhibitors, metal deactivators, demulsifiers,
Dispersant, detergent, upper cylinder lubricant, and anti-icing agent.
