図19を参照すると、まず初めにステップ100において、負荷センサ41の出力信号に基づき算出された機関の要求トルクが読み込まれる。次いで、ステップ101では、要求トルクに基づき燃料噴射弁3からの燃料噴射量Qが算出される。燃料噴射量Qは要求トルクが高くなるにつれて増大する。次いで、ステップ102では、機関の運転状態が、図8および図17Aに示される自着火領域RR内にあるか否かが判別される。機関の運転状態が、図8および図17Aに示される自着火領域RR内にないと判別されたときには、ステップ103に進み、点火栓59により混合気を着火させる火花点火燃焼が行われる。
自着火燃焼を生じさせることができるという利点がある。

- 燃焼室内に配置されてガソリンからなる燃料を噴射する燃料噴射弁と、燃料噴射弁からの燃料噴射作用を制御する電子制御ユニットとを具備しており、燃料噴射弁から1次燃料噴射と2次燃料噴射とを順次行って1次燃料噴射の噴射燃料および2次燃料噴射の噴射燃料を自着火させ、圧縮行程中に、燃焼室内の温度が700Kから900Kの間で、燃焼室内の温度上昇に対する着火遅れ時間の変化が抑制される着火遅れ時間の変化抑制温度領域が現れる内燃機関において、該電子制御ユニットにより、圧縮行程中において燃焼室内の温度が着火遅れ時間の変化抑制温度領域内の温度にあるときに燃料噴射弁から2次燃料噴射を行わせ、燃焼室内の温度が着火遅れ時間の変化抑制温度領域内の温度に達する前の圧縮行程中又は吸気行程中に燃料噴射弁から1次燃料噴射を行わせ、1次燃料噴射の噴射燃料が自着火した後に2次燃料噴射の噴射燃料が自着火するように、1次燃料噴射の噴射時期が2次燃料噴射の噴射時期に比べて早い時期に設定される内燃機関。
- 機関の運転領域内において、自着火燃焼を行わせる自着火燃焼領域が予め設定されており、該自着火燃焼領域内において機関の発生トルクが予め定められた境界を越えたときには1次燃料噴射と2次燃料噴射とが順次行われ、該自着火燃焼領域内において機関の発生トルクが予め定められた境界よりも低いときには1次燃料噴射のみが行われる請求項1に記載の内燃機関。
- 2次燃料噴射の燃料噴射量は1次燃料噴射の噴射量に比べて少なくされる請求項1に記載の内燃機関。
- 圧縮始めの燃焼室内の吸気温度が高いほど、2次燃料噴射の噴射時期が進角される請求項1に記載の内燃機関。
- 機関の運転領域内において、自着火燃焼を行わせる自着火燃焼領域が予め設定されており、該自着火燃焼領域内において機関の発生トルクが予め定められた境界よりも低いときには、機関の発生トルクが高いほど、1次燃料噴射の噴射時期が進角される請求項1に記載の内燃機関。
- 排気弁を排気行程中と吸気行程中において夫々開弁させる二度開きが可能な動弁機構を具備しており、該動弁機構により排気弁を吸気行程中にも開弁させることにより圧縮始めの燃焼室内の吸気温度を高める請求項1に記載の内燃機関。
- 燃焼室内に配置された点火栓を具備しており、燃料噴射弁から噴射された燃料を点火栓により着火し、この着火燃料を火種として1次燃料噴射の噴射燃料を自着火させる請求項1に記載の内燃機関。
