これらのテレビジョン信号は、フィードホン/LNA(Low Noise Amplifier:ロー・ノイズ増幅器)ユニット22にフォーカスされて受信される。

(Background of the Invention)
1. Industrial application fields
The present invention relates to digital television signals and, more particularly, to receiving and measuring off-air digital television signals.
[0003]
2. Explanation of related technology
High-definition television (HDTV) devices and other digital set-top boxes must be able to receive digital signals, such as terrestrial digital television signals. In general, terrestrial digital television signals are received by television equipment in addition to digital television signals from other sources. The standard signal strength of television signals provided by other sources such as cable broadcasts and satellite broadcasts (ie DBS: Direct Broadcast Satellite) is generally determined by the television receiver with the incoming digital television signal. The signal strength is sufficient for processing and use.
[0004]
For analog and digital off-air television signals, the antenna must be connected to the television device. If several digital channels are available, the user may have to manually adjust the antenna to obtain the best possible reception from all available channels. It is known to perform a channel search routine to obtain all individual samples or “snapshots” of the currently available channels for various antenna inputs. The channel search routine stores the channels detected during the search in memory (eg, EEPROM) and deletes all previously stored channels that are not currently available. When the device is powered on, the channels in the EEPROM become a channel list. If the user tries to adjust or move the antenna, the signal strength of some digital signals (channels) may be too low to be tuned (or received). Therefore, various channels may be deleted when the power is turned on or when the user starts a channel search. Furthermore, weak channels are removed in view of the case where the user moves to another broadcast area (off-air, cable or satellite broadcast).
[0005]
Some digital television signals may be available to the user only after manually adjusting the antenna to obtain the best possible reception for the various channels. In order to effectively obtain the best antenna arrangement, the user needs to know the signal strength of the various digital television channels. Also, when using rotors and control electronics, if the signal strength of each digital television channel is known, the best antenna position for each digital television channel is determined and stored. And can be used.
[0006]
(Summary of Invention)
Recently, dish pointing screens (screen displays, ie, On-Screen Display (OSD)) have been used in Digital Broadcasting Satellite (DBS) products. This dish direction screen displays the direction of the dish, but this display is performed simultaneously with the display and / or playback of the audio / video signal or the signal strength of the off-air digital television channel. Is not done. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, the currently tuned channel is displayed in the background and its entry item is highlighted. If the correct channel is not displayed, the first channel in the list is highlighted.
[0007]
In accordance with another aspect of the invention, a method and apparatus for displaying real-time signal strength of an off-air digital television signal is provided. The antenna information program / routine, preferably using a graphical user interface, is adapted to edit the list of received channels for any antenna input and to provide real-time signal strength for all or any of the received digital channels. Display and generate audio and video for any specific channel. Since audio and video are ongoing (ie, active) while signal strength is displayed in real time, the user presents an acceptable level of audio and video quality, ie, a cut-off threshold. The lowest signal strength can also be found. Finding this cut-off threshold is particularly effective when the digital broadcast comes from different directions and the terrestrial antenna cannot be pointed in both directions.
[0008]
According to yet another aspect of the invention, the user can switch to another antenna input while the antenna information routine is in progress. By doing this, the channel list representing the available channels can be refreshed for the new antenna input. All the channels obtained by channel search over a period of time are kept in the antenna information list used for the antenna information routine. Thus, the antenna information can be a list of all channels that have been added to the channel list by a channel search. The antenna information routine attempts to tune the tuner (or selector) to signals of various channel frequencies for every channel in the channel list. If the tuner is able to receive a usable television signal, the channel is retained in the channel list. If the television signal is digital, at least the intensity of the signal is measured and displayed if possible.
[0009]
The value of the antenna information is used to check the signal strength of the digital channel while changing the position of the antenna. The antenna information usually includes only the currently used antenna, rather than including two antennas simultaneously.
[0010]
According to yet another aspect of the invention, the user can scroll through the list of channels currently in the channel list. When any specific channel is selected, the tuner generates audio and video for that channel, while the real-time signal strength is updated on the display screen (digital channels only). The list of currently available channels includes both analog and digital channels. This is to provide the user with an integrated channel screen that can easily verify the effect of antenna adjustment on both analog and digital channels.

The antenna information screen has a strength that was previously measured in the past antenna information measurement process and is insufficient to exceed the “signal strength threshold criteria / level”, and therefore from the channel search to the channel list. Channels not added to are kept. The reason why this is desirable is that the user may not know what local channels are available, and once the user knows which channels are available, the user is at his discretion, This is because the channel can be added to the channel search list by adjusting the antenna so that some channels have sufficient strength.
[0026]
When the measurement of the signal strength is completed, the antenna information result screen in the
[0027]
When the user selects the “Antenna Information” function, the signal strength for that channel is measured and / or updated. When the user scrolls through different channels, the tuner will try to connect to the highlighted channel. When the channel is detected, signal strength measurements are performed and / or updated. A channel is never automatically truncated because its signal strength is insufficient. This allows the user to know which channels are available, try adjusting the antennas, add enough signal strength to the channel, and add the channel to the channel list. it can.
[0028]
The list can be sorted in such an order that the lowest channel number comes at the top and the highest channel number comes at the bottom. For channels where analog and digital channels share the same virtual channel number, the analog and digital channels appear next to each other in the list.
[0029]
The user can update the information for each channel by simply moving the highlight to each channel in the antenna information screen (see 64b). Furthermore, the current channel including audio is displayed on the video screen behind the antenna information display area, which makes it easier for the user to adjust the antenna. Further, the user can switch between the antenna and the antenna input by selecting “antenna” from a button on the remote control or a menu selection item. Each time a full antenna information search is performed, the signal strength for all digital channels is measured. Each highlighted channel in the grid has its signal strength updated in real time while the audio and video for that channel is played in the back of the

[0031]
When a channel in the list is highlighted (64b), information about that channel is continuously updated. If this is particularly useful, the digital channel sending the “Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP)” (ATSC Document A / 65) guide may change the channel lineup. In this case, an analog channel having the same main channel number as that digital channel is included (simply defining the main channel). In this case, the antenna information list expands the amount of information and includes this new analog channel in the
[0032]
To adjust the position of the terrestrial antenna to obtain the best signal strength for a given set of digital channels, perform several antenna information searches for each terrestrial antenna that receives the digital television signal. Maybe it is necessary. The signal strength for various digital television channels needs to be monitored in relation to the antenna orientation while adjusting the antenna position. An optimum antenna position can be found by performing antenna information search many times. After so optimizing the antenna position, a channel search must be performed to add each channel to the channel list.

The above principle will be described using an example. A new terrestrial antenna for receiving off-air digital television signals (
