Abstract

981,446. Connecting-rods. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. Jan. 16, 1964 [June 17, 1963], No. 23999/63. Heading F2T. A connecting-rod comprises a light metal body 1 to take compression loads and a band 4 of heavier metal, e.g. steel, to take tension loads which extends from end to end of the rod and is secured to the body under tension so as to hold the body in a longitudinally precompressed state. As shown in Fig. 1, the band extends around the flanges 5 of the H-section body 1 and the big and small ends 2 and 3 and is tensioned by having its ends 6 drawn into abutment by the nut 11 of a bolt 7 passing through washers 9 and elongated holes 8 in the ends 6. There may be a further tensioning device comprising a bolt 12 which passes through the band and body 1 adjacent the big end 2 and cooperates with washers 13 having bevelled band contacting faces 14. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the ends of the band 4 are connected to the body 1 at the small end 3. In a further modification, Fig. 9, the band 4 is formed by two parts connected to the body 1 at their overlapping ends 4b and placed in tension by bolts 12 and washers 13.
