Abstract

954,042. Luminescent screens. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 3, 1960 [May 6, 1959], No. 15557/60. Heading H1D. Prior to the formation of the metallic layer by deposition on an organic film of e.g. nitrocellulose or synthetic resin which is afterwards removed by heating, the luminescent layer of a cathode-ray tube screen is first wetted with an aqueous solution of an organic polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol, an alginate of monovalent metals or groups, polymethylene oxide or a carboxymethyl-cellulose derivative, in such a dissolved strength as to increase the viscosity of the solution to a value lying between 1.1 and 7.0 centipoise. The selected polymer may also reduce the surface tension of the solution, or the solution may also contain a further substance dissolved therein to reduce the surface tension.
