Abstract

1418196 Thermionic cathode constrictions RCA CORPORATION 4 April 1973 [7 April 1972] 16021/73 Heading H1D An insulated thermionic cathode "dark" heater is coated with particles of high thermal emissivity material by passing it through a bath comprising a liquid vehicle in which the particles are evenly dispersed. This prevents the particles penetrating the insulation and reducing to resistance. Penetration is caused by liquid near the surface of the bath containing a low concentration of particles and hence having a low viscosity and high penetrating ability. A cathode heater for a colour TV tube comprising an Al 2 O 3 coated W wire is dipped in a bath of W particles dispersed in nitrocellulose, alcohol and butyl acetate. The particles are 0À5 to 10 Á in size. The bath is prepared by ball milling the particles and liquid until the specific gravity or viscosity reaches a stable value. The bath may additionally contain Al 2 O 3 particles. Mo, C, Cr 2 O 3 , BN 3 , SiC particles may be used instead of W. The insulating coating may be ZrO, BeO or Cr 2 O 3 and TiO 2 .
