Abstract

930,358. Two-part couplings. HARVEY HUBBELL Inc. Dec. 28, 1961 [April 19, 1961], No. 46517/61. Class 38 (1). In a plug-and-socket cable connector of the type in which after insertion of the blades the plug is rotated to lock it to the socket, a key, intended to prevent connection of non voltagecorresponding plugs and sockets, mates with a hole in the socket, the key being mounted so as to allow the locking rotation. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, L-shaped blades 23, 24 fit into slots 21, 22, contact being made with contacts 6, Fig. 5. The plug is then rotated so that the shoulders 28, 29 of the blades hook under the front face of the socket, at the same time maintaining contact. The key 48 is mounted on the plug so that it can be rotated against a frictional force when the connector is locked and unlocked. In order to polarize the connector one plug blade 24 may have an offset rib 42 at one edge extending for the same depth as the locking end portion 27, and the socket in this case has a correspondingly shaped slot 22, 43 to allow the insertion of the plug. The connecting wires are pressed against the contact members in both plug and socket by insulating end caps 2, 31, contained in metal end caps 3, 32 to which longitudinal compressing screws are threaded. Both plug and socket are also provided with strain relief clamps 8, 39, held in position by legs 10, 40 trapped inside the metal end caps 3, 32. Variously shaped keys are described.
