Abstract
914,809. Electrolytic grinding. ATELIERS DES CHARMILLES S.A. March 26, 1959 [March 27, 1958], No. 10667/59. Class 41. A tool, e.g. a wheel, for electrolytic grinding of workpieces, comprises a support of porous, insulating material 3 of which the pores communicate with each other to form passages 4, at least a portion of the passages 4 being rendered electrically conductive at 6. The wheel may comprise grains 2 of carborundum, corundum or emery in a vitrifiable material 3, e.g. a ceramic or resinous binder. The conductive layer 6 may comprise a deposit of silver obtained by chemical reduction on which copper may be electrodeposited, and the copper may fill at least a portion of the passages 4. The metal 6 may be deposited electrolytically, by high-frequency heating of metal powder introduced into the pores 4, or by introducing molten metal therein by centrifuging. The wheel is mounted on a hollow metal sleeve and current is led to the wheel through a brush contacting a ring, e.g. of bronze, soldered concentrically on the face of the wheel. In use, a jet of liquid electrolyte is directed on to the workpiece which is contacted by the wheel. The part of the wheel carrying the layer 6 may be confined to the opposed faces and peripheral edge, or the whole wheel may be metallized.
