907,232. Stud-and-socket fastenings; rivets. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS. Jan. 7, 1959, No. 10442/62. Divided out of 907,231. Classes 44 and 89 (1). A fastener unit comprises an article 128 having a rearwardly-projecting stud 130 and a fastener 32e for fixing the stud in an aperture 136 in a panel 138, the fastener being in the form of a member having a head 34e to fit against the panel adjacent to the aperture therein and a shank 36e extending from the head and capable of insertion through the aperture, there being an axial aperture 124 extending through the head and into the shank but terminating short of the end of the shank, for accommodating the stud, the shank having a transversely yieldable portion 126 including a shoulder 118 which faces obliquely towards the head when the fastener is unstressed and which is capable of engaging behind the panel adjacent to the aperture therein after insertion of the shank and which has an inner surface capable of engaging the stud, the arrangement being such that insertion of the stud into the shank prevents subsequent inward yielding of the transversely yieldable shank portion so as to hold the stud and fastener mounted on the panel and the stud and fastener seal the aperture in the panel. As shown, the engagement of the shoulder 118 is at the edge of the aperture 136. In another arrangement, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the stud is formed with a plurality of stepped portions which engage a similarly-shaped aperture in the shank of the fastener.
